Family Crest

Not a lot to say really, but I did want to share an assignment I had my 6th graders do.  We were talking about family and relationships.  SO I had them each design a family crest for their own family.  Below are a few of the results.  I have my own thoughts and comments on them, but I will withhold them.  I’d like to hear what you think!

Before they designed them, we talked about symbolism and ancient family crests.  How those old crests were designed to mean something – colors meant something, images meant something.  Symbolism 101 in 3 minutes or less!

Some of the sizes and shapes are different because I cropped them to remove their names when they had put them on the front of the paper.

So…..whaddya think?

I think some of ’em paid a lot more attention than others!

i am surprised at how much religious symbolism is in them. i think they did a great job. xo

I am sure the males in the family would LOVE all the hearts!

I like how many of them put hearts and love in– that’s a good thing. The one with the dollar sign on the cross amuses me to no end. And as for your last entry, isn’t it amazing how strong the vibes are off of kids? Especially teenagers!

Big Smiles ……..

I . . . just . . . don’t . . . know . . .

They are all so beautiful. I, too, am surprised at all the religiosity in the symbols. LOVE all the hearts. I hope it is indicative of what they have in their families and not what they wish they had.

They’re very expressive and I suspect a specialist in art therapy would have a field day looking into some of the psyches. The black and bleeding heart with the frozen cross below speaks to me. I’m not sure of what, and it strikes me as pain-filled and angry, but it speaks. With a thoughtful look…

I would say they listened to “teach” on using symbols and colors. I agree with the poster who was surprised at the amount of religious symbolism. Have you seen some of these symbols painted on bridge overpasses in the area? Some of it kind of seems “gang like.” Maybe my imagination?

P.S. … Though it was an extremely difficult decision … I would have to go with the Large heart ! Big smiles (again) … 🙂

I think you can certainly tell the girls from the boys! LOL Hugz

They did such a great job. You can tell they really worked at them. I’d be sitting here trying to decide what to put in my crest. You know my options are unlimited. I don’t think they’d be fit for 6th grade viewing, though. 😉

I agree with Torin about the burning heart one. I was amused at the pirate looking one. And I truly hope that the cross does mean as much to them as it seems.

That crest with the burning heart and frozen cross stands out for me, too, for its emotional intensity and its sheer artistry. I’m also struck by the bottom crests, especially the last one with its reference to Vietnam. All the students did a terrific job.

What I wouldn’t give for the chance to hear from the artist’s mouth their own reasons for the colors and forms that they chose! Wow!

I agree with the last noter; how good it would be to hear the students explain their symbolism. Many to me reflect an idealism of love, peace and (I imagine) what they are taught in church.

They are all very interesting, most using the same symbolism in different manners. I bet it was fun for them, though.
