Banging My Head

I don’t really have anything to say, but I have the urge to write.  Maybe if I bang my head against the wall some words will fall out….

Oh wait!  Before I abuse my wall….I remembered something!

The house phone rang tonight and – for some reason – I answered it.  That’s odd in itself.  I rarely answer my house phone.  People that I want to talk to use my cell.  Everyone else (read – bill collectors, solicitors and other annoying individuals) calls the house phone.  That’s why God made answering machines.  heh.  But tonight, I answered….

Ms. Wolf?

Yes

This is Ahmed.  From Turkey.  Istanbul.  You know – the capital?

Yes

A couple of years ago you were in Turkey and you bought a rug from my shop.  A nice persian rug…

Not likely Ahmed.  Good-bye.

Ok folks – now what was THAT about?

—————————————————————————-

Hmmmm.  No help for it.  I’m gonna have to bang my head against the wall – I wonder where my wall is the sturdiest?  On top of a stud maybe?  (Oh geeze – me on top of a stud  –  don’t I just WISH!!)

Hang on!  I remembered something else!

Chickie wants a "system" for the new baby.  (Don’t we all!)  It seems that a system is more than a car seat…..more than a super-fancy stroller…more than just your run-of-the-mill baby stuff…..it’s carseatandstroller in one!  Somehow.  AND it’s PINK.

It’s what every mother wants.  Or, at least, it’s what Chickie wants.  It’s in the way-over-my- budget category.  It’s in the let’s-look-at-the-consignment-store sub-category.  But wait.  Did I mention that it’s what Chickie wants?  And what Chickie wants….  Yep.  Daddy-dearest will be buying it for her.  We discussed when to go pick it up tonight.  Now – does that answer everyone’s questions about how Daddy-dearest is adapting to the idea of having a great-grandbaby?

—————————————————————————

So far so good.  I’ve come up with two tid-bits.  But I think my bit is now tid-ed out.  There’s a spot on the wall that needs painting anyway….maybe it won’t be so bad if I hit there…

OH! OH! OH!

Food/School News!  We have harvested many banana peppers.  But here’s the thing – what the heck does one DO with banana peppers?  All right – I know that if you go to Subway to get a sandwich they always offer to put them on the sandwich…..but other than that?

Internet to the rescue!

We have "canned" 4 jars of pickled banana peppers.  (How come you ‘can’ things in a bottle?)  And I found a yummy recipe for rice with cheese and banana peppers which we will try tomorrow.  The pickled peppers will be ready to try in another week.  If only I had a student named Peter Piper to pick my pickled peppers……. And we’ll try the rice recipe tomorrow.

And…and…and…my stupid tomatoes are just too darn tasty – to the bugs!  We are trying to stay organic – and so far – the organic bug remedies I’ve tried are woefully inadequate.  What to do, what to do……. We picked the green tomatoes and made Fried Green Tomatoes!  What a surprise – the kids had no idea what they were – and they loved them

NOT ONLY THAT – but we picked some gorgeous bell peppers – and made 4 jars of pepper jelly!  Yum! (I hope)

All of these little experiments were new to me.  The Fried Green Tomatoes turned out well – let’s hope the pickled peppers and jelly are good as well.  If so… we may have a new income source selling jellies and pickled stuff!

Look at a sample of what we’re harvesting…Isnt it awesome?  And I have a BLACK thumb!

Yep – that’s tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, banana peppers, bell peppers, big bertha bell peppers, collards, spinach and lettuce!  You guys just don’t know how much NONE of this is like anything I have ever done!

—————————————————————————–

You know what – I think that maybe I don’t need to beat my head against the wall after all.  I’m sure the wall is happy about that.  After all  –  why punish the wall for my thick-headedness?

One last thing – Did you guys know that I’m gonna be a grandma?  hehe.  I am just SO NOT my image of a grandma.  My grandmother was so awesome.  I can’t even hope to measure up….but I’m gonna give it my best shot!

you should check out this for chickie too. It looks freaking awesome. Although mayhaps a bit expensive, I can’t find the price and didn’t look too hard for it. But I saw it on TV http://www.itzbeen.com/ And also– those kids are having HEAPS of fun. I’m glad you work in a school– seems like it was your calling all along.

“But I think my bit is now tid-ed out.” That sentence made me giggle. Out loud.

Ahmed just wanted those scrumptious vegetables. Those kids look like they’re having a blast, and that green in the bell jars is simply vibrant! (Bell peppers in Bell jars, hmm…)

Those girls are gorgeous! Wow, I wish I’d looked like that when I was a teenager! Hey, you do pretty well for a black thumb! Those vegetables are yummy! As for Ahmed, well, I have no idea what to say. It just boggles the mind.

There’s a 1991 movie, Fried Tomatoes. It’s very good…and so is the fried stuff, as you & your cooking class just discovered. Would like to know why fried stuff tastes so good. The French make superb French fried potatoes. Here’s how they do it: Use peanut oil, because it gets the hottest. At the smoking point, immerse the basket of potato slices of the traditional shape. When the brown starts to show, lift out and let drain over the pot until the oil is smoking hot again, then back in till they’re golden brown. I have a cooker from France designed for doing it, but you can improvise.

I’m lovin’ the motorcycle grand-mama. What lovely produce! You’re growing things all over the place, aren’t you??

Having a grandbaby is actually a bundle of fun. With a smile…

Fried green tomatoes are one of my favorite early summer delicacies here…yummy! The kids look like they’re having a lot of fun and all that fresh produce and canned jelly looks wonderful. I’ve never tried pepper jelly though, how would you serve it? Love the biker grandma…you’ll be a great grandma my friend! *Beams you a big smile* Look at all you do at school and then multiply that love times I’m not sure how much and you’ve got the grandma bit down! No problem for Ms Wolf!!!

I made the mistake of planting just FOUR banana pepper plants one year. Like you, I was left with the problem of what the heck to do with all of them. I didn’t can them, other than throwing them in the salsa I did can! Everything looks gorgeous (can vegetables BE gorgeous?) I’m not putting in a garden this year. Too much work and I’m the only one doing it. I was beginning to feel a bit likeHenny Penny.

my mom is an awsome grand/greatgrandma. I don’t think we ever made jelly or canned in our home ec class.

May 17, 2007

Well think of it this way you will be the coolest and HOTTEST grandma on the planet…*blows a kiss*

May 17, 2007

RYN: Yes, it can be very demoralizing…

May 17, 2007

I think you will be the coolest gramma ever and I am so impressed with your green thumbedness. I wish I could grow something other than mold on the cheese in my refrigerator. 🙂

Oh, lots of interesting things in this entry! I’m delighted Daddy Dearest is enjoying his impending gret-grandfatherhood. And all that produce is fantastic! But I was distracted, I’m afraid, by your “I’ve come up with two tid-bits. But I think my bit is now tid-ed out.” The Australian version of the term is “tit-bit” And so of course that’s what I read. And I’m still chuckling……

May 18, 2007

I’m glad Daddy-dearest is down with it. Chickie looks great and full steam ahead. You sound pretty darn good yourself! 🙂 Yes, must save the walls for baby crayons.

May 19, 2007

Hi there -random reader. I am going to be a grandma for the 1st time in about 4 wks – & I did buy one of those superdooper stroller/car seat things! (with help from others!)

May 27, 2007

YouÂ’ll be a wonderful grandma. The baby will be well loved. Does the baby have a name yet? I love your sense of humor. You definitely have a green thumb to grow such gorgeous produce. The kids look pleased.
