Back…and On FIRE

First things first.  THANK YOU to everyone who sent positive thoughts and prayers my way.  THANK YOU for leaving me encouraging notes and checking back on me while I was busy wallowing.  THANK YOU for not giving up on me.  Some of the best people in the world write here on Open Diary!

And so…….I’m back.  I worked all summer at school.  Let me explain why this is unusual for teachers here.  Most summer programs run only for the month of June.  My program ran through Friday, July 22.  During those two months I ran my part of the program with NO money.  Yet, every day each of my classes was able to cook something.  Nothing fancy – but we always had hot dogs, cookies, french fries, churros, funnel cakes, eggs, sandwiches…..something.  Some of the money came out of my own pocket and for some of it I used up my stores for the coming school year.

Close to the end of the program I was able to go to a meeting with the big mucky-mucks who were the administrators of this program.  They criticized our efforts.  My dander got up – in a big way.  Did I mention that I funded this program WITHOUT the promised monies?  And did I mention that my experience was NOT the exception?  Other teachers came out of pocket to keep their kids entertained and educated.  Some teachers BEGGED at local stores for supplies.  (A big THANK YOU to Home Depot and Lowes both for providing mulch and plants for our horticulture class!)  To add insult to injury, our pay was errated and incorrect.  I am still awaiting payment for the entire month of July – well over a thousand dollars.  They say I’ll get it this Friday….but I’ve listened to that song before.  The chorus is getting boring.

Now we come back to school to find out that they are delaying our first paycheck for nearly two weeks.  When confronted with the hardship this will cause thousands of school district employees – they Mucky-mucks gave us a solution – take out a low interest loan at the credit union.  Are you getting the picture?  None of us will be paid on time and to make up the difference we should wait in long lines for hours in order to PAY to get a loan to cover their screw up.  Why did they think I’d be jumping for joy at THAT idea?  In the meantime, the water department is threatening to cut off my water and the cell phone people are equally adamant.  I’m sure my other creditors will be weighing in soon.

SO – I worked through July 22.   I had the weekend off and then had to attend a day long meeting for Family & Consumer Science teachers on Monday.  I had Tuesday all to myself……..and was back in school preparing for the new year on Wednesday.  I’ve spent hour after hour in useless boring meetings.  The master schedule was mishandled and tomorrow, when school opens, there will be hundreds of students in my school who don’t even have a class schedule yet.  My third period class has 32 students at last count.  I have seats for 28….and 25 is really more than I can work with comfortably in my current classroom with only 2 kitchens available to cook in.  My curriculum is out the window because it is done in levels…..assuming that you will take first the basic class and then the more advanced one.  EXCEPT that they are mixing 7th and 8th grade students in my classes – so I will have basic and advanced students together in 3 classes.

Today I got two new additions to my classes – an 8th grade girl who is severely visually impaird (I think she is legally blind) and speaks NO English and a 6th grade boy who has sickle cell and has already had 3 strokes.  I was given these students because the counselors know and trust me to work well with special kids.  I am – in short – competent.

I forgot to mention that I am also now on the School Improvement Team which requires additional commitment of time meeting with business people and parents.  Oh yes – and abuse from other faculty members who will not get involved because it is not required by their contract when we make policies for the school.  I have also been asked by a district supervisor to provide food for a series of meetings across the district.  At the first meeting I am going to have to feed 700 people with $500.00.  Is anyone familiar with the miracle of the loaves and fishes?  This is gonna rank right up there with that if I can pull it off.  Again – my competence is to blame.

Our professional study day was this Monday.  I gave a presentation about using Power Point presentations and and LCD projector to enhance teaching and facilitate learning.  We are – don’t forget – attempting to teach the Nintendo generation and somehow this requires more changes of activity and more technology to continually capture their interest.  After my presentation the demand was so great for more instruction – particularly in how to use Power Point to make lesson presentations – that I am being contracted to teach classes either in the evenings or on Saturday to show others how to do what I do.

P.S.  I am a "new" teacher.  I am "inexperienced".  My education background is in marketing, not culinary operations or other areas in FACS.  I fly by the seat of my pants much more than is recommended.  And yet…….I am still competent.

I am tired of being competent – but I can not – will not – be incompetent.  I have a very low tolerance for incompetence.  Let me rephrase.  Some people are new or inexperienced and therefor have at least a small reason for TEMPORARY incompetence.  The incompetence I have no patience for is that born of laziness, arrogance and stubbornness.

The students come back tomorrow.  It will be a mad house.  I want to turn tail an run for the hills.  But I am competent.  And I will greet them all with a smile and a laugh.  I will be glad to see them.  I will do what I must…..and a good deal more.  And I will be competent……..all for my bring home pay (when I get it, that is) of about $800.00 every two weeks.

Now to catch up with all of you……but it may take me a while to get back in the full swing!

August 3, 2005

I had to go to a zillion meaningless meetings too. *sigh* Have a good day tomorrow!!!

August 3, 2005

Holy cow. You are more than competent, you are a saint. Either that or insane. 700 people on $500. Milk and graham crackers?

August 3, 2005

Oh my. Oh my. Oh my. I’m not quite sure what else to say except that it’s lovely to have you back.

August 3, 2005

You deserve alot of gratitude–not complications and excuses. Don’t you have a union in Florida ? Illinois teachers never deal with those sort of problems. Your pupils are lucky to have you. You should send a letter to President Bush. His brother is not doing well with education in his state.

August 3, 2005

Oh, so GOOD to see you back!!!!! Well, tell your mucky-mucks to perfom a physical impossibility on themselves. The bastards!

August 3, 2005

I’m gonna smack them around for not paying you.

August 3, 2005

Hope you are able to keep your sanity amongst all the chaos tomorrow. 🙂

It’s amazing that you’re treated so poorly, while they expect so much. Take out a loan? Not in MY lifetime. How about an organized protest? If I were a parent there, I’d be outraged. I wonder how many parents know what’s going on.

August 3, 2005

((hugs)) and oh my goodness, and I think the mucky mucks need a good kick in the seat of the pants, kind of like some corporates I know. 🙂

August 3, 2005

Oh, welcome back!!!! And yes, you are competent! Be proud! And at the end of the day what matters most to you are the students. And your successes with them will stay with you all your life, I promise you, and it is much, much more rewarding than dollars in the bank. BUT why is your pay not coming on time?!! I’ve only heard of this happening in third world countries. (Please tell your MMs that!)

August 3, 2005

I have missed you.

August 3, 2005

Competent? I think you raise that word to greater heights than ever imagined. Looking in from here, the word amazing works better. I’ve missed you but I thought perhaps you just needed a few days to yourself. Fat chance, eh? LOL.

Beans, rice, sugar and flour, by the sack, are unbelievably cheap at Costco. Eggs, 18 extra large for a dollar (crates even less), milk $3.80/gallon. You are an angel for those kids!

August 4, 2005

It sounds like you’re a lot more than simply competent to me. It sounds like a lot of hard work and dedication.

August 4, 2005

Good to see you’re alive and reasonably well. I was getting worried and trying to track down my address book to call you. With a hug…

August 4, 2005

i am so glad to see you “alright” and writing today. i have missed you. and i know other od folks have missed you too. the state that our education programs have gotten into is apalling all over the nation. i didn’t know that any school districts were having trouble paying their teachers already earned monies. that’s just so scary. your kids are lucky to have you guiding them teacher…..

August 4, 2005

Good grief woman…busy much?! May your pay eventually equal your obvious competency!

August 4, 2005

Congratulations to you on a successful summer session. I am sorry that your school it not organized. Our county here is really pretty darn good, I guess. The only thing I can think of for $500 and 700 ppl is maybe spaghetti and light bread? Can you take up any donations before hand or get about 100 ppl to bring a dish? Keep that smile and the confidence you have, YOU RULE.I wish my son had u4 tchr

August 5, 2005

RYN: Be VERY careful what you wish for! Hugz

August 5, 2005

all the states seems to operate under the premises that teachers do not need money. but what is bad is that they had an education meeting in the K.C. area that they were paying $50,000 to cater the lunches and yet they have no money to pay teachers or provide for the kids??????? The higher mucky muck should get some competence.

August 5, 2005

*smiles* glad it’s not only the UK that treats it’s workers as numbers. Although I would prefer it if nowhere did *hugs* Maybe you should be off sick for a month and then they could see where they were without you!

August 5, 2005

I always knew that your an amazingly talented woman. You can feed 700 people on $500 dollars by doing it mexican style, do a build your own bar, ground beef and refried beans are cheep then do churro’s of course, corn or flour tortillas and the fixen’s to go with, and lemonaid is cheep also, very good with mexcian food, you could have your classes make mild, hot and OH DAMM that’s hot salsa, Lael

August 5, 2005

ps so very glad that your back and have made it through the summer Lael

: )

August 5, 2005

August 6, 2005

Nice to see you back and so energized. Woe to the slackers who get in your way! lolol Wishing you a great year….try to touch them all, wolf.

August 10, 2005

I’m exhausted just reading about all you have done during the summer and will continue doing during the new school year. You’re an amazing woman. AMAZING, COMPETANT and DEDICATED. That you haven’t had a massive burn-out must mean you’ve found your place in life.

August 13, 2005

I’m so proud of you sweetie! That school and the students are lucky to have you. It makes me so mad that you’re all facing those money problems. Especially when the U.S. government is spending so much on a idiotic war. Seems more important to take care of the students and their education instead. Both Bushes need a kick in the butt to smarten them up. Jeesh! *with a disgusted look & warm hug*

August 22, 2005

Welcome back! I’m still not used to classes starting here in the beginning of August….
