A Walk on the Beach

Dog beach, that is.

Chickie got off work very early this morning – about 15 minutes after I woke up in fact!

For once she wanted to do something with me AND she was in a good mood.  The planets must be aligned in some strange pattern, because, believe you me, this is a RARE occurrence!

Chickie wanted to take Cassidy and Kya to the puppy park.  I suggested one that I just located which is very near here and has – not just a dog PARK, but a dog BEACH.  Oh yeah – puppies, sand and seaweed.  What could be better?

Off we went!

Kya and Cassidy BOTH slipped their collars the second we opened the car door, before we had even gotten to the park!  (yes, yes – they will both bet getting new slip-proof collars – my houdini hounds!)

After a momentary panic, we all headed towards the beach.  There were a couple of dogs there, but it wasn’t crowded.  Cass and Kya did the obligatory butt sniffing and then stood there looking around.  What is all this sand and water?  EW!

So I got Cassidy back on his leash and tried to walk him into the water.  Amazing just how forceful an under 50 pound dog can be when faced with the prospect of getting his delicate little paws wet.  Project abandoned.

Kya, however, bounded in to see Chickie as soon as she called.  The look of surprise when she found out she was in WATER, was soon replaced by the look of longing as she watched another dog swimming out to retrieve a frisbee.

In short order, my babies sorted out who was a water dog and who was not.  Kya is part lab.  Nuff said there.  She splashed and swam and ran around.  Cassidy is many things, but apparently none of them like the water.  Chickie did finally coax him in, but he clung to her side or stood up on his hind legs in a doggie plea…"This is WET!  Please get me out of here!!!!"

In the end, both dogs ran up and down and round and round.  They got wet and full of sand.  So did Chickie and I.  However, Kya stayed in the water and Cassidy stayed on the beach.  Silly pups!

We came home and the dogs and Chickie immediated flopped down on the bed in the spare room and went to sleep.  WIMPS!  Big strong Momma that I am, I sat down on the bed and read a book.  That’s right – no lack of energy here!

We had fun – and we have a new goal – to get Cassidy to enjoy the water!  I figure that will happen right about the time some of my students figure out that ketchup is not poultry….

I wish my dogs liked swimming. I’d love to take them out. This looks like such fun. 🙂

Maybe Cassidy will decide that water is poultry???

Yea, you’re just a burst of energy! lol I hope it was a good book, I feel like I could curl up with a cozy read myself. Help me to ignore my messy office.

I’m so glad you didn’t wimp out. LOL I was thinking that your students could rewrite the food pyramid so that it more realistically reflected the real nutritional values of we humans. Are donuts poultry, too?

*chuckling at the note above this* Great pictures and a great entry. My wintry Monday is brighter because of the images I’ll be carrying with me of your water dog and your land dog.

I miss the dog beach in Chicago! WAAAAAHHHH!!! I was just telling the bf about that place this morning, how I had to rescue one of my greyhounds from Lake Michigan because he went nuts on the beach, running like a fool, and bounded into the lake. Well, greyhounds can’t swim very well and my stupid dog didn’t even TRY to swim. He started to sink like a stone. Next thing I knew, I was in Lake Michigan hauling that dumb dog out of the drink. LOL!!! I was soaking wet, it was freezing out, and there I was with my bewildered hound. Grrrrr….. Anyway, these photos brought a huge smile and a wonderful memory. Thanks!

The attitude dogs have about water sure is different My son’s German Shepard, Luke, went simply nuts over water– ocean, lake, wild river, nothing he wouldnt do with gusto. He was a stick dog, too, you throw it & he brings it back literally begging for another round.

Believe it or not, Sunshine, that talking car probably isn’t far off. Nuance Corp has the means to do that now. They know how to turn text into voice, with nuances, and translate from one language to another. A friend said they have a hand held device for foreign travel in the works. That would be a great aid to me; am going with a family group to Turkey 9/3-19

Great pictures! That looks like so much fun.

That looks like so much fun!! I wish I could turn Cuckoo Clock, Ace and Thea into dogs for a day sometimes – cats won’t go near the water. Maybe Kya is part cat? Do you say her name Kee-a or Kigh-a? Cassidy: “I’ve got Momma Chickie wrapped around my fuzzy little finger, don’t I?”

We have a puppy beach up here and both my dogs just love that place! These are great pictures; I’m glad the planets aligned so well for all of you. 🙂

I wish we had a dog park here. Maybe then my goofy dog would have learned how to interact with other dogs. Or humans for that matter! lol

August 8, 2006

lol! I love the pic of Cassidy on the hind legs. My dogs used to hate water too, and they were border collie. Weird weird weird.

I have no idea if Brynna would swim, even being half lab. She’s hell at herding the kids around, though. That’s the Australian Shepherd in her. I do know she possesses a certain phobia about the hose and baths. Poor girl.
