This is my house I bought here in DC.  Some of you have heard about it, but I know I’ve been horrible about writing.  Now you can see what I’ve been doing.  It’s definitely a fixer upper, but…  it’s mine, and I can do the fixing up as time/money allow.  I’ve been really good about not running up credit getting things for it.  I’m doing it all on a cash basis!  When I get it all fixed up, I’ll sell it and get another one, but have cash in the bank to use!  Let’s see, what all have I done to it…

I’ve painted most of the interior.  Sanded the floors on the upstairs floor (working on getting them stained and finished soon.  (was working on that some today).  In the kitchen, I took 3 layers of tile off the floor.  The backsplash was those little 1 inch by 1 inch tiles, in brown, tan and white (God-awful ugly!) I chipped all those off the wall.  I removed the base cabinets, and moved everything around.  I took out the vintage 1968 wall oven and countertop cooktop stove.  When Mom and Dad came down in October, we took out some gas lines which were not going to be used any longer (two hookups for dryer, one for wall oven, and one for the cooktop) and installed a new line for the new gas range I purchased!  I’m still not finished, but I have the cabinets and DISHWASHER in place, just not hooked up completely yet.  I’ve decided I am going to raise the cabinets up about 4 inches, to make it an easier height for me to work in the kitchen.  OH, I also found some granite countertops in the perfect configuration for my kitchen on Craigs List for a price that I could actually afford!   So I have granite countertops!  (yes, I’m all hoity toity now)  LOL

I also refinished the floors in the kitchen, but then after I finished them, I realised the hardwoods in the kitchen are different from the hardwoods throughout the rest of the house.  So, I have a feeling I’ll be putting tile in the kitchen again, only this time it will be ceramic, not old asbestos or peel and stick.

In the main bathroom, I have peeled off the wallpaper with the huge hot pink flowers, and painted the walls white – KILZ white, to be exact.  Just had to make it a little more palatable.  I also installed a new medicine cabinet, and have a light fixture to put in there, but haven’t put it in yet.  The one that is there has a power outlet in it, so until I redo the entire bathroom, and put in an outlet, I want to keep the only outlet there.  But, I still have the little hexagon tiles (in pink) on the floor, as well as the pink tiles as a tub surround, and four feet up on all of the walls!  It’s horrible, but it is functional, and I will just have to deal with it for now.  When I DO get to it, I am going to totally change the bathroom around because of the poor layout of it as it is.  (While sitting on the throne, you can lean forward and rest your forehead on the sink.  yes, they are that close.)

I’ve also changed out most of the lights in the house, all the bedrooms, basement hall, and breakfast nook.  Haven’t decided what kind of light I want in the kitchen yet, so that one remains.  The dining room actually has a crystal chandelier which is pretty nice, so i will keep that.  I’ll just have to clean it up some.  Oh, did I mention the house was absolutely FILTHY when I moved in?  They couldn’t have cleaned the house in months!  Everything was filthy.  LOTS of Pine Sol later, it is livable.  LOL  Notice I didn’t say spotless?

In the backyard, I had to totally clean out the driveway, because it was overgrown with weeds and tree sprouts.  Now I can actually park my car back there!  In front, I just had to trim the bushes and roses.  Other than that, I’ll have to paint the trim, etc in the Spring.  Would like to replace the 8 windows on the back of the house, but will have to wait for more money for that…  hopefully I’ll get a decent tax refund this year, since I bought the house!   Sure would be nice!

I hope everyone is doing well!  Sorry I haven’t been on here much.  You can all blame Lehper for me being on here tonight.  He IM’d me and told me to check out his latest entry.  I decided to stay on a while, and well, here I am!  🙂

Hopefully no heart attacks were caused by my being here.

I almost had a heart attack. Got a good giggle out of the description of your bathroom. Sitting on the throne and resting your head on the sink.

Maybe the previous owners were prone to contracting food poisoning, hence the proximity of the sink to the throne.
