Who knew??
As an insulin-dependent diabetic, carb counting is an absolute must. Knowing the number of carbs in the foods I eat allows me to calculate the number of units of insulin i have to take. It’s actually quite simple. But honest to goodness, I never gave a thought to counting calories….BIG MISTAKE!!
Those of you who have been reading my diary know that I joined a gym about five weeks ago and have been working out pretty religiously….because I want to better control my blood sugar, and to lose some weight. It’s done wonders for my blood sugars, which makes me very happy! But the other day I stepped on the scale and it turns out I have not lost one pound…..not one friggin’ pound!!! This after five weeks of huffing and puffing and sweating my ass off. Talk about discouraging! So I was talking to my mom about it today on the way home from the gym and she brought up counting calories instead of carbs. I told her I couldn’t NOT count carbs because that’s how I figure my insulin usage, but that I hadn’t been counting calories. She told me I should, because the cause of my non-weight loss could be that I’m eating too little or too many calories.
As soon as I got home I added up the calories of the foods I ate for lunch…..and almost fainted! HOLY CRAP!!!! Even though I had a low-carb lunch, it was LOADED with calories….820 to be exact!! In my mind I guess I just assumed that low carb equaled low calorie. WRONG!! It’s usually the exact opposite….low carb equals high calorie. Well doesn’t that just suck?? So now I have to count both, but you better believe I’ll be doing it because in a little less than two months I’m going to see my son J in Washington and I want to be at least 15 pounds thinner….hopefully more! And since I had a nice high calorie lunch, I only had salad for dinner. And I added up every freaking calorie of everything I put into that salad as well….lol.
When I go see the doc tomorrow I’m gonna ask him how many calories I should be consuming each day. My mom says only 1,200, but I work out for an hour to an hour and a half a day, five days a week, and I don’t think 1,200 calories a day is enough. Even the fitness trainer at the gym said I should be consuming 1,500 calories a day. So we’ll ask the doc and see what he thinks. I’m also going to join Weight Watchers as soon as I get paid next week. I need a structured program and eating plan. That way it’ll be easier to keep track of carbs and calories.
Man, I will be so glad for next week! T and I both get paid, thank goodness. Paying for the apartment and deposit and furniture and making my car payment, all over the past week and a half, has left us with not a whole heck of a lot of cash left over. T still has money in his account, but we’re only using it for gas, smokes, and a prescription I had to get filled today. But it’ll be better after we get paid next week. I desperately need a haircut. It’s a hot mess right now….all I do after I wash it is comb it out and put a headband in. It’s gotten too long to do anything with it. I need a coloring too, and T just told me that since he also gets his per diem next week, I can get both the cut and color…..YEE HAW!!!! Ahhh the little things in life….*sigh* I think I’ll also get a pedicure, but I’ll pay for that myself. My heels look horrible!
I can’t really think of anything else to say. I hope I get a decent night’s sleep tonight cuz my doc appointment is at 10:45 in the morning. Fingers crossed!
Take it easy, my OD compadres…..or take it any way you can get it! 😉
Do you also follow the glycemic index? My brother has to watch his sugar intake due to having a heart attack years ago and I guess it’s a pretty good thing. I’m clueless…and you know that muscle weighs more than fat, right? Sometimes you’re losing inches instead of pounds…and sometimes you’ll actually GAIN weight when you’re working out…HUGS!!!

Good luck with the doc tomorrow morning. I’ll be thinking about you when you go! Hopefully he’ll get you set up with a good daily calorie count and that will help you with your weight loss efforts. I know you can do it, cuz hell, if I can, anyone can. Although I shouldn’t speak too loudly. I haven’t lost another pound yet, according to the doctor’s scale today. Then again, I haven’t been watching my intake as closely either, as of late. Must get back on that wagon!
