Staying at the computer All Day Long isn’t healthy. I should have gotten up after I finally got all my homework squared away. Should have gotten some fresh air and not wasted my day. Right now my ass is sweaty and I feel nothing but hate for this beautiful computer that I’ve built and tweaked and raised up from a humble little pile of silicon. I want to take a hammer to it, quit school and go live in the woods — maybe in a hollow tree on a bed of pine needles. Isn’t that how they do it in all those pithy fantasy novels I read? I’m a little old to be raised by wolves, though. Mayhap the local lonely wood witch will take me in — since I’m willing to give up all things electronic right now.

I’m sure I’ll feel entirely technophilic once I get a solid night’s sleep. Perhaps I’ll even be optimistic about midterms and paying the rent. Nothing beats working for a living. Fuck, I need more playtime.

Since I’m being grouchy, here’s a short list of things that piss me off on OpenDiary.

  • Owners of Favorites-only or OD+ only diaries that note others. I like to discover new diaries by following notes; being stymied is annoying as hell. If you don’t want to be part of the community… then DON’T.
  • Adding private entries to Reader’s Choice. Another tool to discover new diaries made mostly useless in the blink of an eye.
  • Pop-up ads that defeat my pop-up blocker. Livejournal can do without, but OD apparently can’t.
  • Feeling isolated. But that’s mostly my own fault. Must read more, note more, and … well, write more. Nobody reads if I don’t write.

I’m debating what it is that will kick me back into a higher gear on a permanent basis. And if I should/ought/would be best served by pretending to “reintroduce” myself. I mean, I can say that I’m writing for ME. But obviously I have a public blog. Therefore I’m also writing for YOU. And do you really want to go back to 2001 to learn about me? Eh.

Maybe I could try and make some of those dumb Internet surveys actually interesting. You know, through mysterious half-answers combined with bouts of scathing sarcasm. I like that. Post if you’ve got one you think I should chew on.

Warren Ellis (writer guy and self-proclaimed Internet Jesus) claims that blogs have a half-life. They reduce in vitality after a while and kind of wither. I dunno if its true – but I can see what he means. Warren seems to fight this fatigue by starting a new blog every 2 years or so and abandoning his old ones. Maybe you’d feel energized with an LJ or blogspot blog and a whole new audience

I can empathize on the school thing. My whole last two years – I just wanted OUT NOW. I didn’t want to write any papers or log any more hours in the computer lab figuring out statistical regressions etc et al. Then, finally, it was over. Tried to go back to grad school this year – only to discover that my hatred for writing BS papers was still going strong.

you’ve really thought out this OD thing. i agree, i haven’t been able to make the move to any other blog site, although the pop ups make it very hard to love OD some days. as for the surveys, you just have to take the plunge. hard at first, cause you don’t want to be one of those people, but deep down, i think we all are, one of those people.

RYN: LOL re: your demand of more 🙂 🙂

Oh, I think that you should totally reintroduce yourself because I just followed a note back to you. And we are writting for ourselves… but there is that audience. I get frustrated with my writing when it becomes more about the audience and less about being for me. But then again, by giving more details and mundane meanderings for clarification sake then in 20 years if I ever re-read this place I’ll be able to figure out what I was talking about. =)

i would agree with you on those things about OD too. and yes, write more! absolutely. i don’t have a survey you can have but i think you should make one of your own up. you have the balls and the humour.

mutiny to LJ isn’t the answer though. I hate LJ.

RYN: These days I really have to think about what I like about Randy, because we’ve been due to break up for a few years with the increasing distance between us emotionally and psychologically. I will continue to mull on that question, however, and write an entry once I feel I can be honest and not spiteful about it. These last couple of dumb fights have left a particularly sour taste in my mouththat I need a few more days to wash away.

How about just a wee summary of a few areas of your life, for those of us new? 🙂 What’s going on in your “learning” life, your work life, your social life, your family life… that’s lots of fodder for entries right there. 🙂 Dedicate one entry to each topic, no matter how short the entry ends up, don’t give in the to temptation to combine them. 🙂

Sometimes just writing is interesting enough. M
