Stupid Humans- Sex

Sex.

The very word is something that makes people perk up and pay attention. Some get a little smile inside when they see it, some people get disgusted. Others get addicted to it, and many people spend massive amounts of time and energy chasing after this one little thing. Sex is something that has motivated humans since Adam and Eve looked down and noticed that they were different.

So why is it that humans are so driven by this? I know that there are people who aren’t driven by it as much, but generally speaking it is something that drives almost everyone to some degree. Perhaps it’s more apparent with the people who seem to have a different person in the sack every night, but it is also something driving the good people who do what their parents say and saved themselves for marriage because it drives them to abstain and save themselves for their spouse.

In a way it is a bit strange for me because I AM a human and totally know why this is such a driving force. Yet being as how I question almost everything, I have to wonder why it is this way.

American society has almost deified sex. In America it’s almost like people are expected to have sex. This is especially true in the media. Everything from movies to music to commercials are centered on sex because it sells so well and because it’s what they think people want.

Now let me ask a question that may seem a bit stupid. What is it that give sex this status as such a driving force for people?

Let me also say here that I am talking about SEX, not love. Sex and love are two completely different things. Although you can have one with the other, you don’t have to (and it there are a very large number of people satisfied to have sex without love). I’ll hit on “love” some other time.

Is it just the fact that man is really just an animal and is bound by the same lusts that are found in other animals? Perhaps. Although much of the time with animals they only have sex when things are ripe for procreation, so they don’t seem as preoccupied by it as people.

Some would say because it’s fun, but rollercoasters and snowboarding are fun too. You don’t see too many beer commercials using those to sell beer, do you?

I really don’t know if I can explain why it is that people are so driven by this. I do think that it’s stupid that we are though. I think it’s stupid that so many people are preoccupied (to varying degrees) by this thing.

Sex is just sex. As much as some will swear that it’s some “special” thing, it’s just something that people do. It’s just physical touch, only a bit more personal than a handshake.

So no, I don’t have any answers, just questions. Maybe if a bunch of people start asking then we can all find an answer. But I still think it’s stupid.
