Is It Worth Living?

For the vast majority of recorded human history, there have always been certain people or groups of people who have sought to control and have power over everyone else. Also for almost all of recorded human history, those who have been enslaved and controlled by others have desired to be free.

There is an innate characteristic within a good deal of people which says, “I wish to live my own life, forge my own path, and discover my own destiny without someone else dictating what I can or can’t do or become.”

This is the very characteristic that caused the Founders of our country to, after many attempts at peaceably settling their grievances, break ties with the British (thanks for catching my error Shona) and go to war for independence. It is also the same trait that caused Americans for generations to work to make the country the greatest nation in the world.

It is also this very quality that burns within me and daily consumes my thoughts and attention. This is because I can see my country being slowly swallowed up by slave-masters because many of my more apathetic countrymen and women are willingly give up the very freedoms which are our birthright.

What is it about life that makes us want to live it? Is it simply a fear of death? Or is it perhaps something more?

Could it be that having the ability to choose what to be and who to be holds some appeal? That having the choice over whether to enjoy a day outside in the fresh air or to stay indoors and read actually makes us want to stick around longer to see what comes next? Is it possible that each of us, whether we recognize it or not, is like a movie director and we are each telling the story of our lives and we like that?

What if that option was taken away from us?

The purpose of the American government was never meant to be to provide social programs or to watch over us. The main purpose of the government, as laid out by the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights, was to guard the individual liberties of each and every citizen.

We are now told that we all have to put large chunks of our income into a communal pot we call a “general fund” in which it can be divvied up according to a few elected officials. We are being told what kind of light bulbs we can use. We are told what kinds of vehicles we should be driving. Some people are told how much water or electricity they can use.

Where is it going to stop?

Does anyone REALLY think that someday those who are in power and who are taking the liberties that we are freely giving up are going to suddenly say, “Whoa! We’ve taken enough of your freedom, you keep the rest.” No, they will not.

This may sound alarmist but I am convinced that if we do not stand up and refuse to allow our government to enslave us more, that we will live to see a day in which we are told where we can live, work, and visit. We will be given a certain amount of energy and/or food rations which we will have to use wisely or suffer. We will be told where we or our children can get educated. The degree to which we are enslaved will make the Soviet Union, Cuba, China look like a benign rubber ducky.

I personally would much rather go down swinging than to be stuck “living” a life which has been plotted and planned out by some dickhole in the government. I don’t think that those who are enslaved ever truly live until they find freedom.

“break ties with England and go to war for independence” Your country didn’t get independence from England. Your country got independence from Britain. They are not the same place.
