Free Tibet?

Ever see people with those bumper stickers that say “Free Tibet”? I see them fairly often. Ever wonder what that means? I do.

Is Tibet the victim of some mysterious dictatorship? Is Tibet occupied and controlled by a force that somehow has escaped the radar of the national, and world, media? Is Tibet perhaps locked behind some impenetrable glacier and caged by nature from the rest of the world? Is Tibet even a sovereign nation?

If anyone knows what these people with “Free Tibet” stickers knows that I apparently don’t, please let me in on it because I’m curious what these people and their stickers mean.

No matter what exactly those stickers mean, there is something rather strange that I’ve observed. Most of the cars with “Free Tibet” stickers also wear stickers somehow opposing the war in Iraq.

Now I know that the method of freeing Tibet must depend on what they need to be freed from, but I really wonder how people who are against freeing Iraq and be FOR freeing Tibet.

Should we send in the military? Send them weapons? Give them food or financial aid? Let the UN deal with it (which means do nothing)?

Right about now I really wish I knew what the whole “Free Tibet” thing is about, because then I could say a bit more about it. So please, if anyone knows, please fill me in.

I have no idea what that means, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those stickers.

Yes! I see those stickers and I’ve always wondered if it was some kind of joke that I simply don’t get. I’ll be eager to see if someone can explain it. There’s another one I see, too, that I don’t get, and now I can’t even think of it. Hmmm. A mind is a terrible thing to . . . oh, you know.

dont you remember all the “free Tibet” concerts back a few years ago? i dont know all the details so i could be horribly wrong, but Tibet was being attacked by a neighboring country (china maybe? mongolia? who knows) i believe.

Tibet used to be a country over by China. it was located on a landform in what is now southwestern China called the Plateau of Tibet. I can’t remember when China took over, it was quite a few years ago. But the Chinese government has been opressing the natives of Tibet. The Dahli Lama was from Tibet, and he was forced to flee the country or be killed. (cont.)

Now China is trying to assimilate the people of Tibet into Chinese culture. Not only this, but many Tibetans have been killed, tortured, and otherwise oppressed for many years. This has been done to the point where they will try to escape by crossing the Himilayas during the winter, many of them freezing to death on the way or having to have limbs aputated because of frost bite. (cont.)

The refugees from Tibet have put extreme strain on the resources of the already economically poor neighboring countries such as Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. Many refugees have moved to the United States and other areas of the world, dispersing the culture and the famalies of this area. The Dhali Lama (the leader of the tibetan people) is calling for a peaceful solution to this issue. (cont.)

There are many more details. It is a huge human rights issue at the moment, as it has been for several years. And sorry for all the notes, it wouldn’t let me put it all into one.

Yes, it continues to this very day…
