my weekend

Went beach camping this weekend and it was great. 8 of us went about 3 hours up north to San Simeon friday afternoon. We got there with plenty of time to walk on the beach and get tents set up and all before dark. Unfortunately the guy (Jonah) who was leading the trip was an idiot. Seriously, I question what is wrong with vegetarians. For the entire weekend for food he bought: 72 uncooked tortillas (didn’t know those existed), 3 cartons of 6 layer dip, about 40 oranges, 16 cans of chowder, a cheesecake, oatmeal, one bottle of malibu, mai-tai mix, and daiquiri mix. Somehow he figured that was gonna feed 8 people for an entire weekend. Good god. So, after learning that his plan was for everyone to eat dip wrapped in tortillas for dinner friday night, my buddy Mike and I decided to go get some real food, so we found this cool little beachside cafe and got burgers and firestones while everyone was still sitting at the beach. We also got vodka and mixers. Jonah also only bought one bundle of firewood, so that night was just sad from a camping point of view. We got back to the campsite at 8:30 or so, and they went about cooking their uncooked tortillas and dip using his car’s headlights for light. Then we lit the fire, but dumbass Jonah used all of the firestarter. So it was a rather short fire. Everyone crashed out real early, around midnight. I wasn’t tired, so i got a blanket and lay in the grass watching the stars. The sky was full of them, and I saw 3 shooting stars. It was really amazing. So I crashed out around 1:30 or so. Couldn’t sleep at all, so I was up again at 6:45. One guy had gotten up even before me, but I guess he wandered off to go watch the sunset. Still, I figured since everyone had gone to bed so early they would all be up by 8 or 8:30. Not quite. Lazy people slept in til 10, and a couple til 11. That’s a lot of sleeping, considering how hot tents get once the sun is up, and how uncomfortable the ground is. I was hoping to get a full day in at the beach, but it was not to be. To make a long story a little shorter, we didn’t get onto the beach until about 2 because of more stupidness. Jonah had to stop everyone 3 times before we get to the beach because he saw a surfboard on a car and wanted to go tramping through the woods to maybe find a surf spot, even though 5 of the 8 of us don’t surf, and we wanted a sandy beach, not a rocky one. We did stop to check out the elephant seals though, and that was awesome. Amazing creatures. So, we finally get to the beach, and it’s just great. The 8 of us have the whole thing to ourselves. It’s in this little cove, with great waves for the surfers. Mike and I throw a football, and frisbee around, and Susanna and Neus play some volleyball with us. Good times. Mike and I bought some beers and chips for the dip, as well as more firewood for that night, so we were woefully short. We then went back to the campsite where we made the chowder, which was good. However dumbass Jonah doesn’t know how to make a fire, and refuses to just wait for me to finish eating. I have made many many campfires in my lifetime. It’s not hard. Anyways. the 7 of them put their heads together and come up with the plan to beg for fuel from our neighbors, then douse about half the wood with it. They can’t even get that right, and the neighbor has to do it for them. First, we shoulda saved firestarted from last night. Second, it’s called kindling people. Little sticks. Not hard to find in a forest. You don’t need fuel. Anyways, the fire burns way hot and the wood goes fast, but they fail to see the connection. But it was a fun night, everyone actually stayed up and Mike, Susanna and Neus came with me to go stargazing when the fire burned out. We wandered over a hill and found some nice grass. Saw 3 more shooting stars, which was great. It was funny though cuz everyone fell asleep since we wrapped ourselves in sleeping bags. Susanna woke up like an hour and a half later, and then we all went back to the tents. That must’ve looked really funny, since we were just in this big empty field. Then sunday Mike, Susanna and Scott came with me to tour Hearst Castle, which was really cool. One of those things that was always on my to-do list. We stopped at this awesome little seafood cafe in Pismo on the way home too. Overall it was a really fun trip. Jonah being a dumbass didn’t really bother me cuz Mike was there, and he’s one of my closest friends, so we had each other’s backs and could call Jonah out for being dumb and wasting everyone’s money. Everyone but Jonah was really chill, and we had some really good campfire conversations. So that is what i’ve been up to lately.
