2006

2005 was quite an eventful year, and it looks like 2006 will be even more so. 2006 finds me wrestling with a decision of whether or not to take a job offer in NY. The money is alright, but I wouldn’t be able to maintain the standard of living that I enjoy now. However, there are reasons to take the job. It would be great for my resume, since every employer is looking for people with experience, and right now I’m still short on that. I should have a very good chance of getting promoted within the 2 years of the contract I would have to sign. Also, if I don’t take the job, I need to find another one, and there are no guarantees that I’ll find one that will pay me the same as I am making now. This job would also hook me into the NY job market, which is very lucrative. Also, this company is definitely not going anywhere, so I would not have to worry about stability. Last, but far from least, moving to NY would put me much much closer to my family. I have family right there in the city, and my dad is in Boston, which is a driveable distance. I’d see everyone a lot more, which would be good for both me and them. However, I feel confident that I will make out better financially by declining the offer. I would then have 5+ months of employment and paychecks during which I can look for my next job. Then I’ll get a nice little severance package at the end.

Bottom Line. If anyone ever tells you it isn’t about the money, then they have enough money not to have to worry about it. When you’re 22 and supporting yourself, it is definitely about the money. I’m basically figuring out which option leaves my bank account heavier. NY or LA, doesn’t really matter. Both are fine. I know a few people in each city, not a lot. There are things I like about each, and things I don’t like about each.

My conclusion: Call NY back and try to renegotiate for more money. After I’ve tried that (and most likely failed)….

I have until wednesday to make my decision…

Good Luck

I kinda know how you feel. Once I turn 23 everything is going to change and I’ll be supporting myself. Good luck with whatever you decide.
