College is like camp with homework and eensy rooms

I told myself I wouldn’t. I’ve waited for this day for four years, why would I cry?
But I did. Homesickness ravished me the second my mother walked away. I was going to meet her at night one last time to go see a friend nearby, but I figured it would make my homesickness worse. And now I’ve had to live with the fact that my mom left and I didn’t get to hug her goodbye.
In other news, I’ve been in orientation for four days and it continues until monday. Mostly lectures about the Honor Code (zzzz) and saftey that can’t possibly begin after 9:30am. My dorm has the best laundry facility by far (meaning that it has about 10 washers and driers in the basement whereas other dorms have a max of two each). Unfortunately to balance this out the dining hall in my dorms does not serve breakfast. If breakfast is going to close at 9 am why can’t all the dorms have breakfast? The dorm that does serve breakfast is a bit of a morning hike and so the chances of me ever eating in the morning are very slim.
I have a class at 8am. Suckage. I hope to make a career in city planning or social work so Spanish is the most practical language to take. Everyone where I live speaks Spanish anyway, so it makes sense.
Unfortunately for me the elementary spanish classes go from 8-10am every day of the week and 7-8pm on Mondays as well. Ugh. Spanish is going to take over my life. My dorm mates have already started kidding that I’m never going to be around. "It’s midnight! Where is she?" "Oh she’s probably at spanish".

My room is a double and very small. It barely fits two beds, two dressers, and two desks. The dressers have only three drawers and three shelves above them. How are we supposed to fit a years worth of clothes in three drawers? Sheesh. One girl in my dorm hall has a huge double and her roommate dropped out a few days before orientation so she has this humungous room to herself. It’s awesome. I think I’m going to keep my xbox in there if she doesn’t mind (she already has a nintendo).
My rommate was in boarding school so she has the whole room situation thing down pat. She has two posters, two antique lamps, a vase, an antique phone, and a dress hanging on the wall (decoratoion i guess, it looks nice). My room had a small corkboard next to my bed but it keeps falling down every night. I’ve never lived in one room before. I’ve always used a room only for sleeping and then basically lived at school. So this is weird for me.

My mailbox is just high enough that I have to stand on my tip toes to work the combination lock. The locks are so old that it takes about three tries to get it to work, and i have to do it all on my tip toes. Not to mention it’s inevitable that I leave mail in my box since I can’t see into it. I’m trying to change boxes.
I have to go sleep which they don’t let us do nearly enough. My room is on the first floor and really hot so we keep the windows open at all times (plus a fan). The dump trucks come every morning and load in front of our window at 8am which i suppose we’ll have to get used to. My roommate sleeps just as much as i do (and hates the morning). However I deal with it a bit…better. She sets her alarm an HOUR early so that it goes off every ten minutes when she pushes snooze. The thing is loud too. Wow. now THAT’s a routine. I hate the morning but I know how to get up in one or two small beeping alarms about ten minutes before i have to leave. wow. seriously. intense mornings. i dont know how she or i are going to get up for our 8am classes.
I guess I’ll find out when classes start if I like university or not.
I never took spanish and I am part Mexican. I refused to learn it. Even if its practical to know it. Also, you make dorm life sound so pleasant and fun.

Ah the joys of being a freshman at college. Hopefully after your freshman year, you can move into an apartment instead of a dorm. Good luck with everything though, I’m sure you’ll do great.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW university! Isn’t it exciting? I love the first week of it and trying to figure out which ones are the little newbies. It’s not hard really… if they don’t have a coffee mug and bags under their eyes with just a hint of a cynical look you know they are new to this.

I’m going into my fifth year and I walked out the Administration building muttering how much I hate it. All the computer systems were down… It was so dumb. Either way I don’t think anybody questioned that I hadn’t been there for a while. ^_^
