Haunting Thoughts
Since it’s getting closer to Halloween night, I thought that I’d share a few scary and supernatural things that have happened to me in my life. Especially since one just happened to me tonight.
I was either 16 or 17 when I saw my first ghost. I was working at McDonalds at the time, I was in high school. On Saturday and Friday nights, the store didn’t close until midnight so you’d get out of there about 12:30 or so. One night when leaving the store, I was driving down the same road that I drove every night on the way home. I got to a stop sign and looked at the Granger House sitting on my left. The Granger House is this turn of the century house that’s one of the town’s landmarks. So I looked at the house and there was a girl up in the window on the top floor, the flood lights from the lawn illuminated her clearly. I got a little chill from the sight but I figured that it was probably someone cleaning late at night and went home. It wasn’t until about six years later that I got an email about the haunted places in Iowa and saw that the Granger House was on the list. Apparently around midnight, the figure of a girl who killed herself in the house can be seen in the upstairs window where she killed herself. Little freaky, huh?
Next was when I was living in an apartment in Marion. One night we had some friends over and we were all sitting in the living room playing video games. The living room was connected to the kitchen and there was no divider at all so you could go right into one from the other and see everything. One of the guys got up to get a beer from the fridge and said “What the fuck?” We all turned around and all the cupboard doors in the kitchen were open. Open wide. One of the guys sitting on the sofa got up and left without saying a word. That was the second brush up with the supernatural.
The third was in the same apartment. My first roommate bought a dog, a little beagle dog. This dog had the reign of the place. He’d go everywhere and piss and shit everywhere. Except my bedroom. The dog would just sit in my doorway and stare into the corner where I kept my computer. He wouldn’t bark or whine are anything, just stare. If you tell me that a spirit wasn’t in that corner, I just won’t believe you.
And that brings us to tonight. Let me give you a bit of background.
My father-in-law told me not long ago that in the eighties, a man hung himself in what is now the nursery. His wife cheated on him with his brother and I don’t know what else. But one time, my father-in-law put some cookies on a plate in the kitchen and turned his back to get some milk from the fridge. While his back was turned, he heard a noise like a plate dropping from a bit of distance onto the counter. He turned around and his plate was where we left it but a couple of the cookies on top had fallen off and where a couple of inches away. Well, tonight I went down to the kitchen to grab a cookie for Sharon and something similar happened to me. I got a cookie from a container on the counter and turned around to walk away. As soon as my back was turned, the toaster made the sound of toast popping up. I spun around real quick but didn’t see anything. I didn’t stick around to investigate though. I grabbed the baby from the living room and we headed upstairs as fast as we could. It freaked me out.
I do beleive in ghosts and spirits and I have another reason why, but I’m tired and it’s late and I want to go to bed. I’ll write about it another time.
Yes, I believe they exist too. I’ve never (thank God) seen one, but I believe they’re out there. But I don’t go out there looking for them. That freaks me out. I have a healthy fear.
