Job
So I got the lab job. I left Disneyland on Saturday and started at the environmental lab on Monday. Already in the 3 days I’ve been working there, I’ve made more money than I did in a whole week at Disneyland.
So as for the job itself, I’ll be testing water and soil samples for certain chemical compounds. For those of you knowledgeable in organic chemistry, I’ll be using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer machine. For everyone else, it’s this machine that helps you identify the chemicals in a sample. I think I understand the process, for the most part. There are some details that I need to figure out, but I’m starting to finally feel confident that with a little more training, I’ll be able to do the job just fine.
As for the people there, they seem… nice. I guess. Maybe it’s a combination of me being really nervous about my ability and knowledge, plus coming from a company like Disneyland, but the people really aren’t incredibly friendly. At Disneyland, they hire you specifically because you are friendly (or you can at least fake it), and they expect you to be friendly as part of your job. In the lab… not so much. Add to that also the fact that most of the people working there are Asian and half prefer talking to each other in their native language rather than in English. Possibly because some of them have difficulty with English. I have at least seen a few other white people. So I’m not completely alone.
But anyway, so that’s the job situation in a nutshell.
Oh, I forgot… I got to keep my Disneyland nametag. Yay. I’m going to scrapbook it. 🙂
Score one for Disneyland, they let you keep your name tag. I retired and they threatened to hold my last check because they said I didn’t turn in the belt clip from the cell phone. I damn near went into orbit. Then I was called and told they found it in the HR Directors In Basket. Didn’t apologize or anything just told me they found it. 🙂 – – – –

Sounds interesting. I don’t know about you, but that non-english thing would bug the shit out of me. Good luck with that!
