According to the construction crew that was hired to do the city’s renovations,  the remains of nearly 100 people were buried beneath the basement of Milton’s town hall. If that wasn’t strange enough,  all of these dead folks were found wound tightly and collectively wrapped in the enormous roots of Mr. Magnus’s oddly placed trees. The obvious question was, "How did they all get there?" The interesting question was, "Who put them there?"  It could have been the Winkleman’s, who had built the original homestead. Or maybe it was Eva Wilson, who had a false basement dug out next to the house in order to hide her illegal operation.  It might have been Sven Severance,  who had been hired, out of entailment, by Eva Wilson to do the digging.

 

One week later, after tearing down the south side of the building, pulling up old parts of the foundation and carefully digging around the bones the investigators had found evidence which suggested that the bodies did not happen there on their own. It seems whoever put the bodies there, had also left behind a few other  things. There was a signed deed to the property, a box of kitchen matches, a jar full of tar and a tiny silver bracelet that had obviously been made to fit an infant inscribed with the initials C.C. and the year…1888
