What I’ve Learned While Working a Dead-End Job
Lesson: When there’s a down, there’s always an up… at least you hope.
I guess this could be applied to any job whether it be a dead-end or not, but anyhow this is the list of things I’ve compiled
- It could be worse
- Watch out for paper cuts
- Use your time wisely (i.e. look for other opportunities in the classifieds when no one is looking)
- Write to relax
- Relax
- Google it
- Rest your pinky finger when you can
- Don’t wear high heels every day, they will make you hate life even more
- Even though you hate your job/life, watch your mouth AND facial expressions
- Co-workers are not your friends, they could care less about you and your life
- Everyone likes to talk about themselves and they never listen when you speak
- Listen
- Don’t talk about yourself
- The order catalog is your Bible, learn it inside and out
- You must be able to read your boss’s mind and complete their incomplete sentences and thoughts
- Act like you know what your talking about/saying at all times
- Keep personal info personal–don’t talk about yourself all the time
- Bring a sweater
- Pay attention/take notes
- Do as your told
- The value and importance of the ever-so official word–EMAIL
- Use two spaces in between sentences
- Keep your nose to yourself
- Take advantage of free time
- Speak clearly
- Bring your own lunch
- Drink the free office coffee
- Step away from your desk when you can or else you’ll find yourself sitting for hours straight
- Sit up straight so your back doesn’t hurt when you get home
- Recycle all paper
- Always have a box of tissues
- You must be one step ahead of your boss who always seems one step behind
- Don’t answer the phone without a pen in hand
- You must obtain the power to read the minds of people on the phone. Know their names, why they are calling and where they are calling from without them even telling you
- Know when to reschedule vs. when to cancel vs. when to delay a meeting. How you know this, I don’t know?
- Try not to say "I dunno?" even if in fact you do not know
- It’s not about what you know, but who you know
And lastly, pray that things will get better. Know that God has more in store for you somewhere. Keep your eye on the prize and meanwhile, keep doing your job.
totally goes for all jobs. I especially like the one about the “i dunno” because I have a habit of just saying “I dunno” and now at my new job it really gets me in trouble.
