bird brain

I joined the zoological society today; sixty five dollars for some real fun.  Now I can go for a whole year for free.

The bengal tiger was active.  The gibbons and siamangs were howling at each other.

But the most amazing thing was the
little black bird that was flitting around in the trees above my
girlfriend and I.  First they’d submerge their heads in the pond separating the gibbons and the siamangs and come out with
half inch snails.  They’d fly over our heads and drop the snails
to the ground over and over again.

I wondered why they couldn’t hold the snails.  Were the snails too big?

No.  They were always dropped from high above.  These snails were using gravity to get to the juicy center- genius!

We observed them for a half hour and then went to FIU to research the
grackle’s behavior.  It’s fun pretending you are a scientist 🙂

I read about the Inquisition; watched Simpsons; read Tom Friedman’s
article in the Times and here I am.  So I guess we won’t be
observing birds while we mow the lawn.  I’m a grackle watcher!

I think the snails were more being used by gravity than using it. But oh, it’s genius indeed. Seagulls do it with mussels by my house.
