Scary!

I asked Shabree to watch Alex this morning, so I could get a little extra sleep.  I don’t sleep well, if at all, when she is with me.  A while later, I don’t know how long, maybe an hour? she came upstairs, she’d been in and out a couple of times, so I was just kind of resting at that point, and said to me "Mommy, Alex is choking on a piece of meat."  I flew out of the bed, evidently having said "Shabree, what did you do?" and down the stairs, saying "go, go, go.  Time is of the essence when a baby is choking."  She was laying on the couch, and she was FINE.  No choking.  However, I could see the meat in her mouth, so I turned her over on her stomach on my legs, and dug it out, and it was a large piece of ham, probably a 1/4th of an inch long… TOO long, really.  I think Shabree was trying to let her suck on it, and she proabably grabbed it and shoved it in her mouth…she’s been getting grabby lately, so that wouldn’t surprise me.  By this time, Shabree was crying, and when I took the ham out of the baby’s mouth, she started crying ("Hey, I was enjoying that!")  I was pretty shaky for quite awhile afterwards.  Right after I got downstairs, Jerry was there, dripping, asking if everything was all right.  I told him that it was fine, the baby was fine, not choking.  I swear, kids are just this huge vat of joy and stress all wrapped into one.  I think I would have died myself if the baby had not been all right.  My heart was literally racing, and I just shook a little for awhile, I don’t know how long really.  I got a nap in later, which helped calm me down, and got me the sleep I needed.  I’m thinking I won’t leave Alex with Shabree any more.  She usually does pretty well, but that was a lapse in judgement, but she’s 6, she has watched us "feed" Alex things like ham (where we let her suck on it while we hold it in our hands.)  How was she to know the baby would grab it and shove it in her mouth?  And it was probably fine until the baby fell over and started making choking noises.  At least Shabree had the sense to come get me.  Alex is teetering on the edge of sitting up by herself, but she’s still kind of wobbly.  By this time, both Shabree and Sammi were sitting and crawling.  I don’t know if we’re just not giving Alex the tummy time she needs, or what…though as I’ve said in the past, Shabree learned to crawl a week before she learned to sit up, because of the amount of tummy time she had.

Well… Shabree is in here, and wants to "do something" with me… sigh, it’s 9:30, and I just want to be by myself, but I guess I’ll get off the computer.  She wants to play a game, and I definitely don’t feel like doing that.

Oh, I found some pictures of myself as a baby… looks just like Alex in some of them.  But I see a Book of Me page or two or more potential *smiles*
