The Mystery Of The Pie Bird

Nobody (other than Jenn) knows what a pie bird is??

This is a pie bird! It goes in a pie, to act as a steam-escape place.

You don’t want to accidentally call it a pi ebird, because that is an electronic bird of pi. And that makes no sense. This is food, not math!

I have yet to make a pie, so my pie bird is still rather virginal.

Today has been cold. I slept with gloves on last night. Even though the heater was on, which is rarely is at night. Actually, it rarely is at all. we have blankets, those get used before the heater goes on.

Dinner tonight was leftover tikka masala, with the leftover pineapple we had in the fridge. And some raisins/sultanas/whatever you want to call them. Oh, it was so tasty. I love pineapple, it makes everything fantastic.

I wish we had MASSIVE cups. That would be awesome right now. I want a giant drink. If I was at Aus-home, I would contemplate using Dad’s giant Simpsons booze glass. Mmm… giant beverage.

ryn: Seems like a good idea. Yes they can be *gentle hugs back* So that’s a pie bird! It’s cute! I remember ages ago when then first Tomb raider movie came out they had a giant cup thing at Taco Bell with her on it. For ages that was my favorite cup. I think it got thrown away though. Woo giant beverage!

Nope, I’ve never heard of a pie bird. But I want one.

I’ve heard of pie birds but I’ve never actually seen one or known what they were for. Thanks for educating me in an interesting, random fact today! 🙂

hehe I told Mike it was a Virgin pie bird, only I was distracted and it came out wrong, so I said it was a Virgin Pie Bioooooy hehe Silly games distracting me. I knew what I pie bird was, my gran used to use them 🙂

Do you use it to prick the pastry with so steam can escape? I struggle to understand why the bird would be in the pie so that must be it! Lee Mee xXx

Do you put it in while the pie is cooking in the oven, or ater it has baked? My sister used to drink out of this thingy that was actually a device for making homemade hamburgers because it looked like a glass, but was maybe 1.5 litres. It was…odd. ~jo

I wonder if it would lose its lovely shine if it actually got used. As Lee Mee says, these days we usually just prick the pastry to let the steam out. But it is awesomely cute so i can understand why you want it.
