Hummingbirds are still snobs
This morning I finally got around to icing the hummingbird slice I made at about 4am Sunday morning. Easiest icing ever – 1.5tbsp butter, 1.5 cups icing sugar (powdered sugar for you american types) and 1-2tbsp orance juice, enough so it is a good spreadable goop. I purposely made it a bit dry, because I was planning on sending a plate of slice down to the restaurant when Jake went back to work in the afternoon, so I wanted it to be ‘set’.
Sliced the incredibly-moist-to-the-point-where-it-has-to-be-described-as-wet slice, iced it up good, and threw it in the fridge to set (the kitchen was VERY WARM because our kitchen is directly above downstair’s kitchen). I then proceded to eat the rest of the icing as breakfast. It was FANTASTICALLY TASTY.
I sent these plates of treats back to work with Jake. The note says what everything is (and describes the cookies and slice because the names aren’t very descriptive) and to come get more if anyone wants it. No one did come get anything, but Michele did tell me via facebook to send more cupcakes down tomorrow morning, so they must have been enjoyed (I really took advantage of the ‘sandwich style’ icing on some of the cupcakes, yay for stacking plates!)
Once Jake was gone, I actually tried the slice.
Now, I had tried it at abotu 6am Sunday morning, or maybe 7. It was room temp, and it was…ok. Nothing great. I thought maybe the slice would be better once it was iced, so I was prepared to give it another go. And if it wasn’t good, I would take a photo of me punching it, like I said I would.
The slice was cold from the fridge, and really, it was absolutely perfect. So amazingly yum. The fruit bits were crisp and the floury batter parts were just soft and cold and the icing was …. well the icing is awesome, I mean, I did have it for breakfast!
The slice is completely gone now. I sent more than half downstairs after lunch, and we (most ly me) have eaten the rest since. There is part of it, maybe a third, that I threw in the freezer un-iced. I don’t know why I did that, but I am now glad that I did. Can have it again easily YAY.
This was the final slice. A corner slice, and a very badly iced corner at that. I realise it looks disgusting. And there is actually a hair sticking out of it… but it was still so good. I’ll have to get another picture when I thaw and ice the other part. One day. Until then, this shall do.
Title: Nin went nuts during the blogathon, and kept leaving me hilarious notes about snobby hummingbirds because the slice didn’t seem to be working right for me.
It actually does look nice, bar the hair 🙂 The icing sounds lovely.
