Disjointed and varied.
I accidentally scratched the inside of my nose and now it is all crunchy with dried blood. (If that is gross, skip the next paragraph.)
I found a tiny, mummified mouse today. Under the baseboard heater near the crib. How fucking long has that disgusting thing been there?! And how have I not seen it until now? I clean that area, I swear! EW!! At first I thought it was a strangely-shaped dust bunny, until I picked it up (thankfully with a wet wipe and not my bare hand!) and it CRUNCHED! And then I noticed the tiny tiny limbs. Ew ew ew ew ew.
While I was showering, a bug crawled out of the shower drain. The poor thing was struggling against the water, trying not to get washed back down. So I got our bug-jar and rescued him, but he seemed dead by the time he was out of the water. I hope he was just pretending.
This morning, Ashley and I went downstairs to go see Barb et al. The pool was still set up with water in it from Saturday, so Ash went over to splash a bit. After I picked out all the bugs (some were still alive, but when I’m not naked I don’t mind allowing bugs to crawl on my hands) I took off Ash’s shoes so she could splash in the water, but I told her not to sit down. Not long later, she ‘fell’ on her bum. Smartass. So she got to play in the pool in her clothes. We both got SOAKED. We were out there for more than an hour, although that wasn’t all pool-time. There was a trip or two inside to see Barb and Kerry and Jess (and Russ although he wasn’t there, Ash lists all those names when she is telling me that Daddy went to work), and we went to the store to look at all the produce. She refused to touch a coconut, said ‘artichoke’ so well, and just had fun identifying things. Then we went back to the pool.
This afternoon I had a nice, although short, chat on facebook with some old internet friends. 2/3 of the old ‘gang’. Can’t believe it has been 10 years since we started chatting like that almost every day. I don’t think we’ve had regular group conversations since I moved to the US, so more than 7 years. Wow. Now that makes me feel old.
Speaking of old, Jake and I have been watching Roswell on Netflix. We are halfway through season 1. I loved this show when it was first on, and I am enjoying it just as much 14 years later (yikes). Jake is really enjoying it too, which is awesome. The only ‘issue’ is Ashley often wants us to read to her while we are watching it, so it gets paused a lot. It would be so great if we could watch tv while she sleeps but… such is the life of a family in a tiny apartment.
OH! Tomorrow is going to be so fun. Kerry is coming for a playdate at 10. This is apparently going to be a regular thing, so that’s AWESOME. Ashley ADORES Kerry so much. We have a party at Barb’s house in the evening, so I am going to bake. I haven’t baked in AGES. I think I’m going to make caramel slice, because I make a fucking awesome caramel slice. I wish I could cream butter and sugar without using the electric whisk but I just don’t have the arms for that. Must make it super early in the morning so it will be ready to eat proper when we want it.
Ashley gets such enjoyment out of simple things like looking at produce, doesn’t she. Clever girl to name things she recognises. Good luck with the caramel slice. Have a good time at Barb’s.
