An icecream made me bleed!!
Thursday morning, I got up at 7am. That way, I could eat my breakfast slowly and still have time to pack our backpacks and make sure I’d grabbed everything before we left for the airport at 8:20.
Mum and Dad took us to the airport, which was lovely. Our bags were slightly over the limit allowed, so we shuffled some stuff into the heavier one so we only had to pay for one over-the-limit bag. Expensive. Very grateful to my Mum for paying that. After we got our boarding tickets we went straight through to customs, having to say goodbye to my parents. Which of course, SUCKED. I hate leaving them. I hugged Dad after Mum, which was good, because I got to use his shirt as a tissue and dry off my eyes a bit.
The customs line was huuge and windy, but it was moving the whole time which was nice. Actually, the first huge and windy line was to get our bags scanned, and once we got through that we went into another room that had another huge and windy line. That one moved slower, but still moved. Once we were through that we had to around and around in what felt like circles, until we got to our gate. And we were at gate 6, so it was near the start of them all. By the time we got there, we had an hour to kill before boarding, so we just sat and rested. I was already starving and exhausted by then, and that was only 10:30am.
The 14 hour flight left just after noon. Not long after we were up in the air we had lunch, which for me was fish in a weird lemon/horseradish sauce with carrot puree. Rather yummy. However, after the meal that gave us a mango icecream bar which was way too cold. My guess is we were the first ones to get it, so for the people that got it last it was probably a good temperature. Jake and I both got our lips stuck on the frozen thing which made us bleed when we got loose. Very not fun.
I watched a bunch of movies during the simulated night time that was after lunch (life as we know it, megamind, buried, and I think one more…) as well as some tv (3 episodes each of big bang theory and how I met your mother). I was way too uncomfortable to sleep on that plane, so I felt crazy by the end.
They gave us breakfast just before we landed at LAX, yummy cereal and an even more yummy warm roll with little bits of date in it. So good. I always like the breakfasts on planes, even though the melon salad is always bits of stuff I don’t like (green melon, orange melon, red grape… all ew)
As we were landing at LAX I got to watch the sun rise a little bit, which was lovely. We had to walk even more through LAX than we did through melbourne airport, but it was nice after having sat in the one seat for 14 hours (except for the time I went to the toilet… would you believe that was the first time I have ever used the toilet on a plane? I worked out I have probably flown for 160 hours or more, most of which was in big chunks, so I think that’s kind of crazy) so I didn’t mind so much. As the lady at melbourne said, we had a tight connection. We walked at a speedy but comfortable pace, and we got to the terminal 10 minutes before boarding.
The flight from LAX to JFK was rather empty, which was lovely lovely. It was also only a 5 hour flight, so it felt very speedy. When we sat in our allocated seats, I realised my chair couldn’t go back (and Jake’s tv was stuck on the loading screen) so we moved to the row behind us. Which was awesome, because it meant there was no one sitting in front of us to recline their chairs and make us feel crowded. Also, it was a smaller plane, so Jake got his aisle seat like requested, and I got to sit next to him AND have a window seat, all in one! I had a nice amount of space between my chair and the actual wall of the plane, so I could spread out a little bit (stuck my leg between the wall and the seat in front of me). All that nice space meant I fell asleep right after the meal (chicken cacciatore… rather disgusting, as was the orange-and-grapefruit salad, so I just ate the chocolate cookie that was the dessert), which is good because I had watched all the movies I was interested in watching so I was going to watch The Social Network. I fell asleep quite early during the movie and woke up about half an hour before landing. As we were landing, the sun was setting, which was absolutely beautiful. I took quite a few pictures, but I don’t yet know how well they worked out. That’s to find out later.
We got our bags fairly quickly, met up with Lisa (Jake’s mum) and came home. We got here at about 7:30, where I was happily surprised to find out that while we were away, the ceilings in the bathroom, kitchen and back room got fixed up. They were falling apart from weird leak patterns when it rains. Hopefully that is at least prevented for a while now. Yay.
We went to the store next door and got buffalo chicken wraps for dinner. Last time I had one, it was so deathly hot-spicy I could barely bring myself to eat it. This time it was watery and not at all hot. I can’t decide which is better really. I wasn’t really hungry, so I ate half of it and then had a hot chocolate.
This morning I got up at 9:30. I set my alarm because I had ordered groceries online and they were to arrive at some point between 9:30 and 1. (I always pick the big delivery gaps because it costs less.) They didn’t show up until 12:30. At about 11, I went to the post office to get all the mail that had built up (thanks to the 4 lovely OD people that sent me christmas cards, I totally wasn’t expecting that. Lovely surprise!) because my brain must have thought it was Saturday because I was sure that the PO would shut at noon. After the groceries were put away, we went downstairs for lunch. I had what was possibly the best turkey reuben ever, and Jake had an omelette. Everyone was very happy to see Jake. Barb (the female boss) paid for our meal which was extremely lovely and unexpected. Also means we can eat breakfast downstairs tomorrow because we have the money set aside for tasties anyway. Yay, pancakes!
When we came back up here at 1:30, we went straight to bed because it was the warmest place. I don’t think it has gotten above freezing outside today. It was getting very close, but then it started snowing. Still is. There is about 2-3 inches of snow on the tree branches right by the window. I love snow. But anyway, we went to bed, where I played the pokemon ranger game I got for christmas, and Jake read the Good Eats book I gave him for christmas (which he only got yesterday because it’s rather heavy and I didn’t see the point in taking it over there just to bring it back). And then we napped. I think it was after 4 by the time we got up. Thankfully at 3 Jake had gotten up and put the heater on, so it is nice and warm in here now.
I still haven’t unpacked fully. All the non-clothes stuff is on the dining table, but our clothes are still in the suitcases. No rush on unpacking those, they are all summer stuffs and we have no need for those right now. Our apartment is nice and spacious though, so the two big suitcases on the floor don’t make it crowded in here (doesn’t even make it look crowded) so I really don’t care how long they stay. Probably until tomorrow.
I think it is dinner time. Our brains are both so out of it that I think it will take both of us to cook pasta (and heat jarred sauce) for eats.
The ice cream thing, next time that happens do not remove your lips from the ice cream. Your breath will melt the ice cream no matter how cold it is, and you can let go without bleeding. Sorry you got hurt. Don’t do that again lol. Go slow, take it easy. Wow. Mango ice cream, never had that. but real mangos are totally awesome.

I have never been on a long flight before. Longest was a couple of hours, I think. It must be very tiring. Glad you made it back safe and sound. :o) It takes me forever to unpack from a trip. :oS ~jo

The most lovely sight in the world was seeing you both come through that door. Sleep and rest to prepare for USA life again.

I can never sleep on the plane. Well, one time. Usually, no. And the flights between Sydney and LAX/San Fran are the worst – are there longer flights to anywhere else? If so, I’m not going. 14 hours is enough! Glad you got home safe, and that the apartment is fixed 🙂
