In which our Hero is essentially fired without an end date
The working situation is changing so fast that I don’t really have enough time to document the progression. But I’m put in mind of a quote I used to reference a lot and that applies here. “Power is not a measure of the choices available to you, but how long you can wait before you have to choose.”
Options are opening up. A recruiter says he thinks he can place me before the year is out, but we only just made contact today. My two former mentors have both said they think they will have slots for me Q1, if only I can wait till then. My other freelance buddy is talking to me about a partnership deal which could get pretty cushy if I’m willing to invest a year. So I seem to have a lot of choices.
Little of it sings to me. I’m not excited about any of it. And there are contingency options I don’t like. Turns out the weaselly little child-rapist looking fellow that we’ve suspected of running his own private practice on the client’s dime turns out to be running his own private practice on the client’s dime. It seems like he’s got easy work for someone with specific skills that I don’t know but I’ve taken an introductory seminar to learn. Or if I’m really desperate, there’s a low probability option to try to do an end run by hiring with the company that replaced me.
So there are options. I’m just stuck at the same question as always… what do I want to be when I grow up? In the meantime, I guess I have a hint of colour to my deliberations. I know there’s a little time left. In the short term, do just the letter of my job. Plus whatever else amuses me.
I’ll be relieved when this year is over. In the mean time, it’s time for me to sleep.
Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask. I’ve got a personal domain (say jackserin.com). Have you any suggestions, Gentle Reader, about what kind of email to build from that, for my resumes, etc. Like “jackserin@jackserin.com” is atrocious and redundant. “Himself@jackserin.com” just sounds pretentious. Thoughts?
You could use your three initials. J?S@jackserin.com.

Or the less formal but easier to remember jack@jackserin.com.

I like woman in the moon’s second suggestion. Not showy, not silly–to the point. Your notes are very meaningful. Thank you. I’m removing the filter, true words on paper.
