Back to Work (Almost)

Minnesota’s governor called for a special legislative session beginning at 3:00 pm. The goal is to pass all the budget bills and then the governor will sign them, and the government shutdown will be over. I’m hoping to be back at work by the end of this week.

But, aside from my personal situation, it will be great to have the state parks open again, road work to continue, and people who need licenses for various things will be able to get them. Thousands of people will be able to go back to work. Hopefully, no businesses failed because of shutdown, and over time, we’ll all be able to catch up financially again.

So, here I am, another day at home. I started the day with a work out, and then I went tanning.

A severe thunderstorm barreled through St Paul, so I headed to the basement. I brought along my lap top, camera, coffee, and Ray’s magnifying glass.

While waiting out the storm, I decided to look through the silver dishes that I have stashed in a box under the fake Christmas tree.

The silver is from my parents’ house. I never used it or cared about it, and when Ray and I were going to move to this house, I was going to give it to Goodwill.

Well, Ray always went through stuff I was going to give or throw away, so he retrieved the silver, and that’s why it’s sitting in the basement.

I opened up the box and pulled out the silver plates, pitchers, dishes, and condiment tray. My mother had wrapped them up with plastic so many years ago and I carefully took off that brittle plastic from the silver dishes.

Then I looked at the marks. All the pieces were silver plate, not worth much. I used the internet in a high level way to determine value and nothing was worth more than $20.

I guess Ray didn’t have me save a fortune by keeping my silver.

I put the pieces in new plastic bags and repacked them in the box. It will be probably be one of those boxes that Asher will have to deal with when I die or something I’ll give to Goodwill (without Ray retrieving it!) if I move again or decide to get ambitious to clean house.

By the time I was done going through the silver, the storm was over. The humidity and heat came rolling back. We should have one more day of super hot and humid weather before we get some relief. However, I heard a weather guy on the radio stating it looks like 90+ degrees for next week, too.

But I’m hoping by then, I’ll be back at work, back in my normal, predictable schedule, and wishing I had more free time.

Ahh, I would have no trouble at all filling empty days.

I guess with a laptop and wireless signal you don’t have to worry about a power surge during a storm. I’ll cross my fingers that all the legislation is passed and everyone is back to work tomorrow.

The photos look cozy; seems a comfy place to wait out a storm. Nice detail work on the silver. I hope the government starts working again soon.
