6th Generation Australian

We had decided that today would be The Day. We went about lounging and cuddling in bed for a bit, showered, washed and put away the dishes, and hopped into my little red car.

We drove. We signed in. We waited. A very long time. We were both quietly confident. And quietly very happy.

Finally, "Diosa Deamore". We walked up and followed the tall and lanky, aging Doctor. Into his office. "How can I help today?" he asks.

"I’d like to get a pregnancy test today" I say.

When was your last period? 6weeks ago.

Are you trying to conceive? Haven’t necessarily TRIED.

But it would be good news? Yes it would.

Any symptoms? Tenderness in the breasts, they seem a bit larger.

Type type type.

"Oh and… period-like cramps for the past 10days".

The doctor smiles confidently. Type type type. Hands me the cup and says excitedly, "Pee time!"

I knew that he knew.

Came back into his office. He chuckles, "It’s funny the way people carry pee. It’s just pee".

He’s reading over my medical history. A letter from the Mater sent to the surgery back in April.

He chuckles again, "They write at the very begining that you haven’t been using protection for 4years at the time, and they STILL tell you to go have sex for 6 more months! Gosh, they’re bloody hopeless! How much longer do they wanna make you wait ?!"

We laugh too.

He proceeds, "Well, it seems to have worked anyhow cos that’s turned positive".

An "ooooOOOOoooooh" escapes my mouth. I steal a glance over at Sinjay who is smiling into my eyes already. He holds my hand.

The Doctor goes about asking usual questions. My medical history – Herpes Type 1. My family medical history – asthma and schizophrenia. Sinjay’s medical history – thalacemia. We don’t know which type.

All the while Sinjay is stroking my hair, holding my hand, leaning against me, cuddling me. He is very happy, and feeling full of love. He holds me gently. He keeps smiling at me, his chocolate brown eyes melting…

"Well, that’s all folks and congratulations!"

I say, "Thankyou for your time, it was a pleasure".

We walk out on clouds, our arms around each other, smiles plastered on our faces. We get back into my little red car and drive away.

We talk about what we should name the baby in the meantime. Munchkin. Hardihar. Midget. Hardihar.

I say that perhaps we could call it SinDee, but Sinjay says that that will make us inclined to actually name the baby SinDee once it’s born and he doesn’t want to be prejudiced that way. He says we need a neutral name that we’d never use in real life.

Sinjay jokes about the fact he won’t have to spill in a cup now. He jokes that he won’t be able to get his RX7 and we’ll be stuck with our cars for a few more years to come. He jokes that we need a bigger house.

I talk seriously about the fact that I don’t believe in Baby Rooms. That I want the baby to be with us. Until they’re big enough to have their own bed of course. He says he doesn’t mind this idea himself.

We’re happy. We’re excited. We want to tell the whole world. But Louis is going out with mates, and Sinjay doesn’t want to call Cherie unless he can tell Louis at the same time.

We decide we’re gonna tell Luke & Deity tonight. We text them advising we’d like to visit. I don’t want to CALL Deity, even though I know she’ll be expecting me to… I want to tell her to her face. Luke mentions Deity’s not feeling too well. I tell Sinjay perhaps we shouldn’t visit them then. Sinjay says firmly, "Once we tell them, she’ll REALLY appreciate our visit". He convinces me.

Louis texts us to tell us that he’s not going out with friends after all, that he’s coming home. Sinjay is happy and excited to be able to tell Louis tonight. We finish celebrating at Hungry’s, as is our style LMAO, walk into the house and Louis tells us about his day at the races and how he won $30, and he was so happy and so excited. Finally he asks "So what did you guys get up to today?" Sinjay says, "We had eggs on toast for breakfast, we washed the dishes, and we went to the Doctors." "What for?" Louis asks. Sinjay replies, "Oh.. To find out that we have a bun in the oven".

"BULLSHIT!" exclaims Louis. He simply would NOT believe us lolol. Finally I took out the little plastic instrument to show him the two red lines. "Two red lines means positive – One red line is negative". Louis was still in disbelief, and I said to Sinjay to call his Mum so that Louis could believe us. I think it was then he realised we were NOT joking lol.

We drove to Luke & Deity’s. Said our hellos as usual, they showed us their "new home" (they’ve recently gotten rid of some old furniture and re-arranged their home)… And finally Deity said, "So what’s news?" She had called us earlier on in the day, and Sinjay had told her we were going to the doctors "cos we think somethin’ might be happenin’" I walked over to my handbag, and took out the plastic instrument, handed it to her. She stared at it for a good while, as though her brain was trying to bring it all together in her mind. Finally she gasped, "You’re pregnant !!!" She threw her arms around me tightly, and held me for a long time. Luke was also really happy and congratulated us.

The visit was filled with excitement, happiness and wonderment. It was absolutely lovely. Deity congratulated Louis too, on becoming an uncle. Louis was also really happy to be sharing in this moment.

Somewhere along the line Sinjay called Cherie, and then he called Bernard. "Oy Dad, is there a 6th generation in our family yet?" Bernard says, "Not unless you kids have one". Sinjay says, "Well, there’s gunna be."

"Is Dee pregnant !?!?!" "Yep". Then there’s excitement in his voice, "So does that mean I’m gonna be a GRANDFATHER !?!?!"

"Yep you sure are!"  "Aw ya makin’ me sound like I’m an old man !!!"  "You ARE an old man Dad".

On the way home we discuss what we should name the baby in the meantime. Deity had suggested Lentil because it’s as big as lentil at the moment. I gush about the fact that that was MY nikname when I was born (Lentejita = Little Lentil).

We joke about labour time, and how the nurse will ask for the baby’s name, and we’ll automatically say "Lentil" and the kid ends up being called Lentil for the rest of his life.

We say our goodnights. Louis says, "Goodnight ! Don’t let the baby bug bite!"

Sinjay quips, "It’s too late!"

Louis quips with a purposeful, "OH."

So here it is ! The big news !

I am going to be a Mum : )

And Bebe is going to be a Daddy : )

And we’re going to be wonderful parents together.
