To Be Continued…

Derby de Mayo was a festive holiday in NYC.  I went to French class, and then came home to get ready to go out.  While I was in class, S had brought me home cake-flavored vodka (!) and made me a cake-vodka-seltzer while I showered and got ready.  We went out to our local, me in my long black dress, red heels, and derbylicious hat (no I don’t have pictures, but it was the same hat I wore last year to the actual Kentucky Derby, with a different dress/shoes.)  We had drinks, watched the Derby, no horses broke their legs or died, and "I’ll Have Another" won, so we had another.  And another!

And then we went to the Dar Williams concert at NYU, still in Derby attire.  No one else was dressed up, and I was trashed after three drinks and sitting in the front row in a huge hat.  Grrrrrreat.  There was an opening band, like a hipster rip-off of Barenaked Ladies, and then Dar came on.  I think the magic has worn off.  Her new album professed to be about Greek Mythology, which I’ve been obsessed with for probably 25 years, and I thought it was a wonderful idea for an album, but she really has no deep knowledge of the subject at all, or at least none she chose to share in her lyrics.  So sad.  She played some oldies and it was nice and all but I just don’t see her as a creative force anymore.  It was kind of devastating.

So we went out a bit more, came home, and I decided to cut my own hair.  Drunk.  With pinking shears.  Sounds shockingly stupid but didn’t turn out too badly.  I thought I might have to make an emergency visit to the salon, but it came out fine.  I may get it layered or something after I get back from vacation, but for now it’s fine.  Except that I hate short hair.  Even shoulder length, which is probably the best description of mine right now.  Oh well.  I almost wish it came out crazy looking so I could justify getting extensions.

The rest of the week was surprisingly uneventful – I refrained from laughing in the face of everyone who complimented my new "haircut" and got through the week.  Put together an unnecessarily elaborate PTO plan because I wasn’t sure if I would have good internet access, and got everyone totally stressed out at the prospect of having to cover my work.  Win!

On Thursday, we went to the spring gala for the NYC Ballet which was amazing.  There were three components, the first "Mes Oiseux" by Peter Martin, super-gorgeous, with costumes by Gilles Mendel.  Very short, but completely beyond.  The next was by Benjamin Millepied, "Two Hearts," with costumes by Rodarte.  I don’t love these designers, they seem like crazy recluses and looked like crap in person, but the costumes were okay.  Ballet was very nice, interestingly they had a singer, not just instrumentals like usually, so that was cool.  The last section was my favorite, very traditional Balanchine "Symphony in C" with oodles of frothy white tutu-d ballerinas and men in sleek black leotards.  I think they put some LED lights in the costumes, they were ridiculously sparkly.  (As if there is such a thing as too much sparkle!)

I will admit, one of the best parts of the evening for me was seeing Grace Coddington, tall with frizzy red halo chatting with Drew Barrymore, tiny in a long white dress and black blazer. To me this was huge since I think Ms. Coddington is one of the top great creative talents of our time.  I would love to see the world through her eyes.  Here is a photo of the Gala from above.  I love to see everyone in a beautiful space with colorful long formal dresses, and I love this blurry cellphone photo, blurry like a Seurat:

The next night we saw The Avengers which was good, then came home and had tofu with orange ginger sauce with red pears, baby spinach, and brown rice.  So delish.  And almost unbelievable that I actually cooked.

The next day I felt like crap and barely managed to pack, get to JFK, and make my flight to Nice/Cote d’Azur.  I was all out of sorts with allergy sickness, being a baby and not wanting to travel by myself, to a new place, and a different language adding to the degree of difficulty.  But S was a dear and helped me out and didn’t mind my craziness too much.  He snuck onto the security line with me for a bit, and he clowned while I went through the metal detectors.  (Or whatever they’re detecting these days.)  Flight was uneventful, I watched "Columbiana" and tried to get some sleep.  I was really congested and uncomfortable though so didn’t sleep much.  Before long, they were coming down the aisle with coffee and croissants so I switched my watch to local time and got on with the morning.

Blew through customs and I had booked a driver beforehand, I think this is the first time I’d done this for personal travel. He met me with a sign at baggage claim, and made conversation that I struggled to hear through my ears that felt like they were wrapped in cotton.  And all in French.  Oy.  But it was fine, I checked in and had great intentions of going to the grocery, walking my route to school, etc, but really I just fell asleep for the next twelve hours.  And then I washed up, set my alarm, and went to sleep until the next morning, when I had to be at class by 9am.

I found my way to school (all hills, like San Francisco caliber hills!), drank an Orangina, had a tour of the town, took the written and oral placement tests, and all was good.  Found the ATM for my bank (I am so cheap I walk 1.6k out of my way to use my bank’s ATM to avoid a fee), went to the grocery, ate bread and brie for my first food in over 24 hours, and then went to sleep again. Navigating smaller towns panics me, it’s not like you can just jump on the metro if you get lost.

Got up, ate a pear and some bread and took allergy medicine.  Walked to class, the first part of class was just answering conversing on various topics, I think the teacher needs to speak with everyone intensively to gauge whether you are in the right level, which is good.  Everyone in my class seems around my level although some have been studying for years, but I think having a good vocabulary and learning spanish first helps a lot, although sometimes I get the words confused.  We spoke for two hours, did some written stuff, received homework, and took off.  I made it home successfully which I was proud of.    I ate lunch, and meant to go for a run along the water because it’s so close here, but I fell asleep and didn’t wake myself up until 6am local time.

I woke before the alarm, had coffee, ate bread and a banana, showered, and did my written homework.  Walked to class and again the weather was so lovely. Class today was good and even if I am 100% grammatically and vocabulary wise, I really need to improve my accent. This class is much more challenging than my school in Paris, and a very different mix of nationalities.  Almost all Scandinavians and Spaniards here, everyone likes the beach and the sun.  I love the sea but hate the sun.  On Monday, it was very sunny but for fifteen minutes in the afternoon, the rain came down strong even while the sun was shining!

Received lots of homework because tomorrow is a holiday, also the Cannes Film Festival starts today and everyone says it rains during the festival each year.  So much grammar homework, stuff I don’t even know in English except instinctively, which reminds me once again, I wonder, why do I bother trying to learn other languages when I still haven’t mastered my native one?  Oh well.  Here’s some photos to reward you for reading this far through my insanity.  Not that I ever had a normal life but as I get older and older I am reminded at how different my priorities and life experiences are than practically everyone I know.  For me, I guess this is just the way that it goes.  But I love the way it’s going:

Why is no one swimming?!

View from my balcony for the next few weeks:

Okay, I just had lunch of bread and olives with some rose and the wind is blowing in as I type this.  I need to go to the grocery to get provisions for tomorrow and make plans for tonight.  It’s going to be a great next few weeks here…to be continued…

WOW. OKAY. I’m currently speechless, mainly because I’m SO. FREAKING. JEALOUS. Take me with you next time? My french is so rusty. I was speaking with my friend’s babies’ opere the other night and was horrified at how many words I messed up or blanked out on. And I used to have the perfect accent too! I’ve just lazily been letting it go to waste, while you are working your freaking ass off perfecting yours. You are astonishing! In all the very best ways. I wish I had a fraction of your ambition. So where exactly are you? And how long will you be there? If you are anywhere close to Azille you should go walk around the vineyards and look for roman ruins! My friend’s family has a house down there and that’s what we did when we went. Pretty incredible. And the best freaking food in the world. Just wow. Still seething with jealousy. Haha. Have a great time!

I loved Nice!

This is all so fascinating!

Awww, lovely, I didn’t know you were going to be in France the next few weeks! If you’re coming to London at all, let me know, et bonne chance pour tes etudes! x

How in the world did you find this type of immersive French schooling stuff? I would love to do the same for Spanish (since learning it from computer software is not really working that well :).

Gorgeous! Are you learning french just for fun? I’m always so torn watching the derby. I love watching the horses run but do not like the risk of them getting injured.

Awesome. I love that you are learning French. IN FRANCE.

We do the same with our bank!

Mmmm, cake-flavored vodka. There is currently whipped cream flavored vodka in my freezer and I’ve been mixing it with everything on earth. Yum. Haha I can’t believe you cut your own hair. 🙂 Brave woman! Nice looks stunning. It is on my list of places to visit for sure. I hope you are having a fantastic time! 🙂

Is this part of your job or are you taking vacation to go away for a few weeks? You must have tons of vacation time if they are fine with that amount of absence. LUCKY!

RYN: Awesome! You mean the w/c 6th August? I’ll be in town then! Escaping for some of it but we have tickets to the basketball so here I’ll be! It would be awesome to meet, finally, and yes, I totally remember that call, I couldn’t hear you well, right? I can’t remember why we didn’t meet, I was out of town for when you were actually here, or something? That was YEARS ago now. And yet neither of has aged a day! 🙂

Quelle ville exactement? Ou, ou, ou?! Tu sais que j’etais a Cote D’Azure et je l’adorais…

May 16, 2012

J’aime.

NOT FAIR!! SO JEALOUS!! pretty intense way to learn a language, impressed you can go to class when you have that all around you…

May 16, 2012

I didn’t know that many shades of blue could exists simultaneously. gorgeous! also, now i’m hungry.

May 16, 2012

You are a very lucky girl. Also, intelligent and pretty, to boot.

SO BEAUTIFUL. I am so incredibly jealous!

Ryn: What a lovely note! Thank you so much. I do very much appreciate you as a person and as a writer and I thank you for sharing your adventures with us through the years. You have been a fascinating read. Xo.

May 16, 2012

I’m jealous. I hope S is coming to stay with you for awhile. That would be an extra bonus!!

May 16, 2012

As always, your life is fantastic. Stunning photos! Can’t wait to see your hair!

Mmm cake flavored vodka, I would be in heaven! Looks like a beautiful trip, love the photos. Also, I love Drew Barrymore I would be so excited to see her (though I’m not the “star struck” kinda person as I’ve seen quite a few).

I want to see your hair.

ryn rmn: hahaha I had figured as much!! Unless all German girls who say their name remind you of me, which wouldn’t be so bad!

May 16, 2012

Grace Coddington is amazing. Truly, totally agree about creative forces. And seems like such a real person. She totally made that documentary for me (which otherwise I found a bit dull…what was it even called? The one about Vogue)

May 16, 2012

You live the most glamourous life! I love reading about your adventures.

Wonderful view! 🙂

Ditto to what [next week] said! ^^

RYN* It’s funny, because Paris reminded me more of Boston, whereas London reminds me more of NYC, just in terms of the huge, busy city feel.

May 16, 2012

is it all right if I live vicariously through you for a bit? that city looks spectacular, and that beach looks perfect.. though it is curious that no one is swimming…

May 16, 2012

Love Dar Williams. Iowa. I won’t be your yoko ono. The ocean. It reminds me of college and mix cds.

May 16, 2012

Ah j’adore Antibes. On peut y habiter facillement! Ca – et Aix.

Sucks that Dar’s album didn’t really go deep into the mythology. Was it basically an excuse to rhyme things with “minotaur”?

May 16, 2012

beautiful photos!!!!! Taper over…time to start training, again!

May 16, 2012

I admire your thorough and aggressive pursue of learning french. You seriously don’t mess around. Cake vodka?! Umm, I need that. I loved Nice, but I remember rock beaches. That powdery sand looks much better.

May 17, 2012

I would go on and on about how jealos I am of your life, like I normally do, but I’ll just laugh at you for cutting your hair while drunk. Cause that makes me feel better.

May 17, 2012

Oh, enjoy! Southern France is so very lovely. ryn: Thank you so much. I’m still a little dumbfounded, but definitely happy.

May 17, 2012

ryn: don’t worry, the screens keep snakes out of the pool area. The back yard is pretty private, so I would suggest skinny dipping under the moonlight for maximum enjoyment. I’ll pretend not to know you’re out there. The drinks waiting for you on the table will be merely coincidental…

OMG this is amazing. Learning French improved my English grammar, weirdly.

May 18, 2012

So jealous! What do you do that you go to so many awesome events and vacations? I’m trying to plan a girls beach trip now for my birthday, late June. Leaning towards Italian or French Riviera..but one girl said it’s mostly old people. True? They’re suggesting Cabo or Costa rica. I want nice beach AND hot men, but someplace exotic. No Miami!

May 18, 2012

How can nobody be swimming??!! They should be banished and replaced with people who deserve to be there! CD xxx

May 18, 2012

Enjoy France! Bonne chance:)

Heavenly!

May 19, 2012

What beautiful views!

May 20, 2012

I used to really like Dar Williams but haven’t heard anything off her new album yet. Sounds like I’m not missing much. I am dying laughing imagining your drunken self haircut with pinking shears. Ohmygod.

May 20, 2012

ryn: I am really jealous that you got to meet Ron Jeremy! I’ve been oddly fascinated by him for a few years now, I really don’t know how to explain it. His book was definitely interesting and entertaining and I learned a few things (did you know there is a penis museum in Iceland?!). It’s funny that you said he struck you melancholy…I got that impression from the book as well. I was surprised tofind out that he has a masters degree and seems to have spent most of his life trying to get ‘real’ acting jobs – like he’s sad because the world only sees his massive penis, not the rest of him.

I cut my own hair all the time. Pinking shears! That could make for a very cool effect!

May 21, 2012

Damn French grammar – so complicated. Don’t tell me about English being the hardest language to learn. : ) Learning French on the Cote d’Azur! You always do things in the most stylish way possible.

May 21, 2012

RYN – You’re my sporting hero! I’m leaning towards Austria at the moment because of the flat run course and the not-too-hilly bike. CD xxx

May 21, 2012

RY Other N – The thing is that I don’t have too many local friends. I just wish she’d be a better friend. CD xxx

I heart Grace Coddington. Ever since I saw “The September Issue”. Now I look for her styling in all of my Vogues. Those photos look great. I liked Nice. Except the hotel concierge laughed at me when I asked them if I shouldn’t swim at dusk because of sharks. Then they sneered when I refused their offer of a 20 euro private beach in favour of the deserted free public beach. Why IS nobody

May 23, 2012

swimming???

June 24, 2012

What a great idea! I would love the chance to learn French in France. My problem is I go so long between using it that I forget it all again. Mike and I went to Nice for the first time in March and fell in love. We want to retire there now. 🙂
