Popcorn & Cocktails
On Monday night, I got my work done but then stayed up too late again, as anticipated. Tuesday morning I luckily didn’t need my extra wake up call, and the day went really smoothly. Did more catch up work while in transit back to NYC, and was home around 10pm on Tuesday. S was adorable after missing each other for a couple of days and it was really nice to cuddle up. Wednesday was our anniversary – we got up early for spin class and I went into the office, but left a little early to get a blowout. I was a little tired and not really in a mood to go out at first, but I sipped a little bubbly in the chair in an attempt to feel a bit more festive. Walking out with big happy bouncy hair got me more into the mood too. The best part was running into S on the street on the way home. My eyes went straight to him a block away and we ran towards each other, dorktastic movie style.
We did a couple of errands, then got dressed up while we exchanged gifts. S got me Madonna tickets and a Chanel lipstick (perfect combo!) and I got him a new set of bedding (weird but he really wanted it) and a certificate with the name and coordinates of the star I named for him. I still remember so vividly, the first moment we kissed, and to this day it’s still the kind of love to name stars after. Then we got dressed up and then went to one of the blockbuster asian-fusion places in our neighborhood – S had been wanting to go but I wasn’t super thrilled since it is more of a place that was cool eight years ago. I was totally proven wrong – it was so much fun. We walked in, and the decor was still really sleek and fresh, but also really luxe and interesting. It was packed with a good local crowd, especially for such a large place, on a Wednesday.
We did something we always used to do – pick a fancy cocktail for the other person, so that the actual drink you would get would be a surprise. S got this yummy ginger bourbon berry concoction for me, and I got him a martini with wasabi infused vodka. Very interesting. We had west coast oysters in three different preparations, all were good but one weirdly had cheese on it! Cheese on oysters – I would not have ordered it if they’d listed that on the menu, but it was tasty. We also got rock shrimp tempura with a couple of dipping sauces, again very delicious but a little heavier than I would have liked – I was thinking of the rock shrimp tempura at Nobu which is lighter somehow but this was more like gourmet fast food. For my main I had the braised black cod with ginger soy reduction and S had the surf and turf with wagyu and hamachi over herbed potatoes, citrus fruits, and avocado. Both really delicious. Finished out the meal with some aged sake (had never had but tasted similar to regular sake) and a yummy scotch. (I think my taste buds are changing again, am starting to like the taste of things like scotch and cheese.) Overall it was a great night and I was really glad I kept an open mind about the restaurant.
Thursday we went to a screening of a Norwegian movie called Hotejegerne, or Headhunters, about a recruiter by day, art thief at night. The idea cracks me up, and the movie was really good, and also starred one of my all time crushes, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. I have no idea how to say his name, but he’s formerly of the awesome but cancelled old TV show New Amsterdam. He would definitely be tops on my laminated list, if I were allowed to have a laminated list anymore. Looks like he’s now on HBO’s Game of Thrones, need to check that out, have also read from a few places that that’s good. Overall a nice night – I love how vibrant Lincoln Center is now.
Friday I worked late and S went bowling with some former coworkers at the new Bowlmor in Times Square. I was zonked when I got home, plus I hate bowling, so declined to meet them out. He came home around midnight and I was passed out. Slept through until right before we had to leave for class on Saturday afternoon. Got dressed, went to class, class was good, then we went downtown to one of our fave local theaters to catch Crazy Horse. It was okay, nothing amazing. I have only been to the show in Vegas so probably need to go to the one in Paris sometime. We had a groupon for two tickets and a large popcorn but the popcorn was so huge we both ate it for dinner and still brought some home for later since S loves popcorn. Although not to the point where he eats it until he pukes anymore, apparently. (Yeah, he did that once, I think it was because he ate the popcorn and then drank a lot of water since the salt made him thirsty, and the water expanded the kernels in his stomach. Gotta love it.) Laid around the rest of Saturday/Sunday and before I knew it it was Monday again. How does that always happen!?!
wasabi infused vodka martini. mmmmm….. methinks S and I have similar palates mmmmm….bourbon

that’s a yummy “mmmm” not a thinking about it “mmmm”

Aw poor guy! Still going to think of that anecdote every time I’m tempted to buy popcorn at the cinema, though…
Warning Comment
wasabi…nearly killed me.

Sounds like a lovely time – you and S are too sweet. :)I have Madonna tickets as well and can’t wait! You should definitely check out Game of Thrones – it’s pretty awesome. My lord, how much popcorn did S eat for that to happen?? Yikes. Sometimes I’m known to make myself a bag and eat the entire thing instead of dinner, but it’s never made me puke before…

Game of Thrones is epic. Really love watching it! 😀

And happy anniversary to you! Of course! 😀

So lovely!

Bedsheets? Too cute!! You and S seem to have so much in common! Wondering if there are any wedding plans in your near future? 🙂
Warning Comment
I did that exact same thing with popcorn once, in NYC as it happens. Glad I’m not the only one with a traumatic popcorn story 🙂

RYN: You’d be amazed at how much editorializing I get about what I think is the most banal of foods & beverages.

Love Morimoto.
Warning Comment
I love popcorn for dinner, it is the best.

Happy anniversary! That sounds like a fantastic way to celebrate. The last time I took the kids to the movie I thought Orion was going to puke from eating so much popcorn. I had to take it away.
Warning Comment
I used to have a friend with that name, same as “Nicolai” (nee-ko-lie). Chanel lipstick + Madonna tix = Tru Luv 4Eva.

Happy Anniversary 🙂

Happy Anniversary! Good to hear about Morimoto as I was holding the same views as you! Food and drinks both sound delish.

The drinks sound amazing. I wish I could drink scotch, especially the really peaty ones. I tried a couple times but ugh, my stomach instantly starts hurting. I think I’ll have to wait until I’m 70 with no tastebuds. Sad! Also, happy anniversary!
Warning Comment
Hilarious about the popcorn. I hate the stuff because of the texture. Like eating shipping popcorn. Blech. But I understand the feeling from many a’pizza slices. Glad you enjoyed the anniversary & I love the surprise cocktail idea!
Warning Comment
I’ve heard Game of Thrones is great, as is the book series. I haven’t read it or seen the show yet.
Warning Comment
rock shrimp tempura is one of the yummiest dishes, when done well.
Warning Comment
I donÂ’t know but the older i get the quicker the weekend goes! Where and when was your first kiss??
Warning Comment
Oh baked oysters with bacon and cheese is a specialty here 🙂
Warning Comment
I love the idea of buying the other a surprise cocktail!! I want to do that with someone one day 🙂
Warning Comment
happy anniversary!
Warning Comment
cilantro infused vodka martinis are orgasmic !
Warning Comment
It’s barely 730am and I want to eat everything you had at that fusion restaurant. Happy anniversary!

RYN: NO, she married into a Hindu practicing family. This would make the henna all the more “shocking” on her sister’s wedding (because Eliza is white).
Warning Comment
ryn Ugh, totally disagree. She is so statuesque and gorgeous, you can see her coming from a mile away. Unnatural posing not required!
Warning Comment
ryn: Hehe, I added her diary name. It’s [Astellus] 🙂
Warning Comment
“Love to name the stars after”—that’s stunning ♥
Warning Comment
Ryn, I did ask about the drugs. He denied, saying his personality is too addictive to get into that. It’s the same answer I tell people when they ask me about cocaine. I believe him, too.

giggle re: ‘dorkastic movie style’

You hate bowling? For me bowling with Hubby is a perfect date night.
Warning Comment
You two are so cute!
Warning Comment
I really cannot wait to live in a city again and be able to go outside and PLAY!!!!
Warning Comment
Sounds like a great anniversary! I find it oddly endearing that S wanted new bedding. And I really like the idea of ordering cocktails for each other – very cute!

BCN lol It’s nice to know someone so familiar with aviation designators. 🙂 I love Barcelona and I know I will be happy there. I am already making friends. The apartment agent happens to live 300 m from the place I will be living in and he rows and has started a foundation hoping to buy a Galway Hooker … they have marina space … cultural exchange promotion … Finally!!! Someone with passion and willing to get off their a$$ to make things happen. Oh yes. I am going to be VERY happy but not out at the airport!!! LOL

I miss Nobu and Blue Ribbon and mmm so many other places! I miss NYC. I’m hoping to be back in NYC for a visit this summer!
Warning Comment
I love that you have that kind of lasting passion for one another. ~jo
Warning Comment
Aww! So happy for your dorktastic movie style love! I hope to have that some day. Love that Madonna’s still going strong in her 50s!
Warning Comment
Ryn: yes I am genuinely puzzled! What am I missing?
