Midnight in Moscow

current books:
Need to go to library, finished these a few days ago:
– Gatsby’s Girl, by Caroline Preston (very cute and authentic-feeling on the Jazz Age subject matter and details.)
– Holidays on Ice, David Sedaris (I am pretty much over him, or at least these stories.)
– The Man of My Dreams, by Curtis Sittenfeld (Decent read, but while "Prep," which I liked a lot, gave me a suspicion that the writer was an odd and nasty little person, this one confirmed it.  I liked "American Wife" though – made a high-profile and unlikeable character relatable, kind of the opposite of this one.)
– The New Yorkers, by Cathleen Schine (Typical, kind of charming but also predictable in an obvious way.)
– Of Love and Evil, Anne Rice (How can you not love Anne Rice?  This one was good but I had a strong feeling of deja vu throughout, probably partially because I had read the first book in this series and there’s lots of flashbacks, and it’s also possible I did read it before.)
– Three Girls and Their Brother, by Theresa Rebeck (I grabbed this one because of the cover photo, and also the author’s name looked familiar, turns out she has a play on Broadway right now.)  Wasn’t disappointed, good story, interesting subject matter/characters, well paced.)

current mood:
Tired, but feeling productive and looking forward to the weekend.  Weekend!

current triumph:
Cleaned out the work email inbox until late last night and finally feeling on top of things again.  I will see white space before I leave.

current music:
New Dar Williams, inspired by Greek Mythology!

current shame-inducing guilty pleasure/indulgence:
Coming to work with wet hair, I have it side parted and looped into a little knot.  It’s too early in the year for this, but I did attempt to cancel out the hair laziness out by wearing powder, lipstick and mascara today, hoping the effect is more Robert Palmer Girl than Unkempt Sea Witch Ursula.

current drink:
Diet Mountain Dew.

current food:
Fresh Strawberries.

current movie:
I’m still really jazzed about The Cutting Edge.  So good!  I am also glad I saw this at an early age so it could demonstrate to me the benefits of working hard, being a complete bitch, and overindulging in tequila shots.

current fetish:
Ice Cubes.

current wants:
– I would like to learn to do an elegant chignon on my hair.
– I’m also interested in possibly dying my hair red and cutting bangs.  I am getting tired of highlights and have been wanting to do this for ages but feel like bangs are already on the way out.  May go single-process at least, we’ll see.
– Palladium and black leather "dog collar" cuff.
– New scarf in floaty spring colors.

current needs:
– Food
– Water
– Exercise

current bane of my existence:
In the ongoing saga of S’s custom-made shirts, he finally got them on May 1st.  (Yes, five months later!)  The shirts are completely normal…except they are about nine inches too long.  Seriously, they both look like women’s shirtdresses!  Trying to figure out whether this is worth following up on or if we should just cut losses and hope someone at Goodwill is looking for a shirtdress.

current color(s):
Black and leopard print.

current excitement:
Vacation soon!

current wish list:
– Two black knee-length shift dresses (the ones I have right now have been worn to death)
– New regular and sports bras (ditto)
– New black legging type pants (to replace the pair I wear all the time which mysteriously has fuzzies/pulls along the right flank, maybe from    rubbing against a bag, or washing?)
– Black caviar leather wallet on chain with silver hardware.  Deciding between regular and half moon style.

current outfit:
Black shift dress, leopard print scarf, leopard print ballet flats, j12, Opi "Midnight in Moscow" nail varnish.  I like the name but "Black Cherry" would be just as descriptive and tastier sounding.

current scent:
Rosewater and glycerine hand soap.

current inspiration:
It’s Friday!

Ha! I’ve just painted my nails with Russian Roulette red!

I got the same impression of Curtis Sittenfeld from reading Prep. I have avoided her books ever since.

“…so it could demonstrate to me the benefits of working hard, being a complete bitch, and overindulging in tequila shots.” That made me laugh out loud! Also…real calfskin? *cries*

Regular. I don’t like the trendiness of the half moon.

If only you weren’t an amazon, then you could have four new shirtdresses!

I could watch The Cutting Edge 100 times. That and Dirty Dancing.

It is so weird for me to read actual physical books these days. Like, licking my index finger to swipe to the next page is a novel experience now? Oh, i dragged my husband to see hunger games a few weeks ago and he fell asleep. But a few days ago he began a text with “real or not real–” The dork ended up reading all three books so he’d he able to stay up for the next movie.

Hey. We may be going to NYC late June for bachlorette trip. Where would you suggest we go?

May 9, 2012

I’m so behind the times, the most recent movie I saw was 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.. never even heard of The Cutting Edge…I need to get out from under my rock once in a while..

I am cracking up over the Robert Palmer Girl/Sea Witch Ursula thing. I’m sure the wet hair looks great on you and anything that can save time in the morning is priceless.

ryn: it really is the best blanket in the world. It is so warm and yet light.

RYN* Thanks! My mom and I made it. I will now be wearing it for the rest of the week.

Hey, I have the Midnight in Moscow nail polish, too! It’s pretty great. RYN: I know, the English language is strange in many ways. However, it saves me from trying to figure out if I have a boy stapler or a girl stapler like I did in grade 9 French class.

ryn: Thank you.
