Girl On Fire
current book:
Rereading The Athlete’s Way. It’s funny, the author Chris Bergland was actually one of the first people I met during my triathlon kick a few years ago. He was managing Jackrabbit, a great tri shop in Union Square and helped me get fitted for a rental wetsuit a week before my first triathlon, Escape from Alcatraz. He asked me what race it was for and looked a little jealous when I told him Alcatraz. This from a guy who’s done almost all the major certified-psycho races that exist, including Badwater and winning the triple-Ironman twice. Also, he ran for 24 hours on a treadmill in a Kiehl’s store to break a Guinness World record. Utter and complete madness!
current mood:
Sleepy, happy.
current music:
Fiona Apple, because apparently it’s 1996 again. She seems a little more rocking and less pouty/crazy this time around…I like it.
current shame-inducing guilty pleasure/indulgence:
I finally took the plunge and got lasik on my eyes on Monday. I’ve been thinking about this for at least ten years. It was uncomfortable and the whites of my eyes are still bruised up (from the suction/positioning equipment they use), but it’s awesome to be able to see so well and it will be great not to have to deal with contacts anymore on trips and swims and hikes and all that.
current drink:
Two liter nalgene of NYC tap water that sits on my desk, I go through at least two a day.
Possibly the largest iced coffee in the world – hazelnut flavor.
current food:
Siggi’s skyr icelandic style yogurt…ginger orange flavor. Yum yum yum yum yum yum yum.
And a bag of baby carrots. Less yum than ginger orange but still tasty and hopefully good for my eyes.
current movie:
We decided tonight at 11pm to go see a midnight showing of The Hunger Games. Probably ill-advised as I need to be at work by 8am at the latest today, but I was caught up in the excitement, plus I did really love the books. It was fun and spontaneous and the theater wasn’t nearly much of a zoo as I’d have thought, but the movie itself was kind of average. And weirdly racist. I thought the girl who played Katniss was great but otherwise did not live up to what I’d pictured in my fantastical little brain. I haven’t heard anything less than rave reviews so far though…so don’t take my word for it!
current fetish:
Sunglasses indoors, and at night. We can pretend I’m doing this to appear mysterious and super-glam and not because my eyes are bruised.
current wants:
A lightly grilled filet of sushi grade tuna. And a spicy ginger soda.
current needs:
Eh. With all the upheaval in people’s lives lately, I am pretty conscious and thankful for being ridiculously happy right where I am.
current bane of my existence:
Small potatoes again but I broke my toe again. But the one next to the pinky toe though, and not on the lucite stairs at work for once. I stubbed it against a piece of furniture in my house. It turned crazy purple on the toe at first and now has faded but I have a weird grey spot on top of my foot around that toe. The body’s healing process is pretty cool. Again, infinitesimal in the grand scheme of things.
current disappointment:
S’s custom shirts were delayed by over a month due to Chinese New Year last month, then when they finally arrived USPS effed up and sent them back to Hong Kong immediately. I wonder if we will ever see these shirts!
current color(s):
Black and grey
current excitement:
Seeing one of my French classmates randomly in the background of yet another reality show about a celebrity stylist. I noticed her because she was wearing those crazy Alain Quilici iceskate shoes in the background of a party scene, and then I noticed it was Robin. She is quite a character…I should write about the different people in my class sometime. My classmates at the Paris school were really interesting as well.
current wish list:
A couple of weeks on the French Riviera
My Ironman level of fitness back
Capsule wardrobe, appropriate for all occasions
Vintage steamer trunk
current outfit:
Black long sleeved boatneck teeshirt, kneelength pinstriped grey skirt, grey animal print ballet flats. And no stockings!
current scent:
Laundry detergent
current inspiration:
New York City in Springtime…bare legs, sidewalk cafes, everyone out and about…it’s divine!
Oh, that’s too bad about Hunger Games. I’m sooo hoping it’ll be good! LOVED the first book. This time of year is divine!
Warning Comment
Those shoes are a bit too weird for me. They also seem hard to walk with… I don’t know, I guess I may be a bit more conservative with my shoe style! That orange ginger sounds divine!! Mmm!! Yay on Lasik!!
Warning Comment
I got my eyes done in September and it’s brilliant. I, weirdly, do miss my glasses though!
Warning Comment
The arrival of spring must be so much more obvious and “in ya face” in the northern hemisphere. Down here, we don’t so much notice such a big change between seasons anymore. People get excited about winter ending (not me though), but really, winter ending just means it goes from 20 degrees C per day to 28 degrees C per day. No disappearance of snow or rain, no real change in trees appearance. That is exciting about the lasik! I hope your eyes continue to heal well 🙂 Those shoes.. I seriously wouldn’t be able to stand in them, let alone walk around one of the busiest cities in the world.
Warning Comment
lasik = laser eye surgery?
Warning Comment
very interesting about that movie. I haven’t read the books and from what I can gather, people who haven’t read them are enjoying the movie more.
Warning Comment
congrats on the lasik!
Warning Comment
Was Hunger Games very violent or upsetting?
Warning Comment
I imagine your spring is spectacular like ours in Toronto… isn’t it awesome?! Yay, bare legs!
Warning Comment
No stockings? You rebel you!! I’m a bit over “here’s an awesome book, let me make it a movie” craze. They rarely do a great job in my opinion and leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Warning Comment
OMG, I’m so JEALOUS about your eye surgery. The process freaks me out, but yeah. I’m so sick of glasses/contacts. I didn’t read the Hunger Games books, so knew very little about the storyline until recently. Brad told me about it, and my eyebrows kind of shot up. Sounds very similar to this much older film called, “Battle Royale”, and I’m thinking it may not be quite as good. Ebert (my movie boyfriend) only rated HG three stars, so there you go. I remember reading about that guy running for 24 hours, HOLY CRAP.
Warning Comment
1. I am thinking about Lasik, never heard of it bruising. Ouch. 2. LOVE those shoes! That leather. OMG! 3. Have you ever used a trainer to get into marathon shape? I’m considering a sports pathologist, ’cause damn.

I am so late to the game (pardon the pun!) on the ‘Hunger Games’ – I decided to check it last weekend and am just finishing the second book – not my typical style, but I love them! Planning on seeing the movie, but typically I prefer the versions in my head! I am heading to NYC next month – delighted to hear that it is bare leg weather! Staying in the Palace hotel, can’t wait! I wonder will I seeyou on the sidewalk in Grenwich or Soho ( I am not a stalker, I swear!) x
Warning Comment
Just reread and saw all of the exclamation marks in note -I am 33, not 16, I swear 😉 Also, ouch on the toe – for something so small it can cause lots of pain. Finally, I was in Santa Clara for a F2F two weeks ago,and D flew in on Thursday and we spent the weekend in San Fran – still as gorgeous as ever – I nearly cried getting on the plane back to the desert. Trying to decide between Hawaii or acombination Bug Sur road trip and Cabo in May – if I didnt have that to look forward I may have refused to get on the plane! x

i’m so confused about this hunger games thing. EVERYONE is talking about it and i have no idea what it is. i guess i should be less oblivious and google it or something. go you for getting lasik surgery. i don’t think i ever could, because i am incapable of properly putting eyedrops in my eyes even, and i know those are required in the healing process and stuff right? new york really isan inspiration at the moment. SPRING!!!! it makes such a difference. you should definitely write about the characters in your french class too.
Warning Comment
OMG Isn’t Lasik the best thing you’ve ever done in your entire life?!?! Seriously, best decision I ever made. I hope you enjoy your life without contacts as much as I am enjoying mine! 😀 And BOO on Hunger Games. I’m still totally going to see it tonight though.
Warning Comment
And PS my bruising lasted about a week. My eyes were still sort of bloodshot maybe another week after that, but it mostly just looked like I was stoned or something. 😉
Warning Comment
the NYT review (read it as soon as i woke up this morning, haha) said that they wished the director had taken more risks and really gotten into the horror that is the entire premise of the books. said it felt a little too…weak..i guess? no matter, i’m still pumped to see it!
Warning Comment
I have always loved Fiona Apple’s music. Her tantrums, not so much… Your poor toe!!!
Warning Comment
a couple of weeks on the french riviera sounds pretty good to me too! my coworker did one of those 120 mile races and felt bad because she had to stop with only 4 miles to go. i don’t understand you guys!
Warning Comment
We are lasik holdouts too, for no other reason than fear. I’ve decided I’ll make Matt go first and then maybe I’ll give in. I just read the Hunger Games and loved it. I don’t know if I’ll see the movie. I’m always extremely disappointed with movies based on books I’ve read. It never lives up to the writing.
Warning Comment
OMG, not finished reading yet but Siggi’s grapefruit yogurt is one of my favorite things in the whole world. takes me 45 minutes to eat a carton, I savor it so much.
Warning Comment
RYN: Yes, definitely an appealing premise! I think there are two reasons I’m not really interested. The first being that its rated PG-13, and uh. I don’t think it has the ability to convey the horror/violence properly (apparently I’m creepy). Secondly, I have a feeling that this is going to turn into another “Twilight” series… and clearly. I’m a huge snob, so don’t mind me. 😉
Warning Comment
No, no marathons for me. My knees would never hold out. I just want to work toward a goal. Like a strong enough core to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5B9LbTX4us&feature=related Especially the move at the 2.33 mark. Amazing.
Warning Comment
Congrats on the Lasik!!!
Warning Comment
If I’m gonna spend $1,200 on a pair of shoes, trust me, those would NOT be it. Who has $1,200 to blow on those?!?!
Warning Comment
Love, love, love Fiona Apple. The old, not the new. She sang the soundtrack to my most epic breakup ever.
Warning Comment
Ooooo maybe I’ll get Tommy that book for his birthday. Or will it give him ideas about triple ironmans etc???
Warning Comment
Those have to be the ugliest boots I ever did see.
Warning Comment
must try that Siggi yogurt.
Warning Comment
Have *almost* bought Siggi yogurt at least 10 times at our co-op. Will have to bite the bullet and try it out. Congratulations on the lasik! I’m terrified of it, but blind enough that I should just go for it already. Love vintage steamer trunks. Shared want.

lasik eye surgery scares me but sometimes it would be nice to be with out glasses. Still have not got into the Hunger Games yet.
Warning Comment
Congrats on the Lasik. I do not think I would ever be able to go through with that – although I would love to never wear glasses again.
Warning Comment
We had an early taste of spring last week here, too. But I think the bare legs will be disappearing for awhile now.
Warning Comment
RYN: I don’t… Ukraine is not EU, and anyway, I gave up citizenship there when I became a US citizen (but I could have my citizenship reinstated if needed since I was born there.)
Warning Comment
ryn: heck ya, we’d kayak for you! 🙂 Hope you do make it to Toronto one day! 🙂
Warning Comment
Yikes! Scary. Eyes are so one-off. Have heard of people it did not work for and they won’t get a second chance. SOOOO good to hear it worked for you!!!
Warning Comment
I loved the books as well… and thought the movie was kind of average. They sort of left out the political angles altogether which seemed to be the thing that elevated the books from the normal young adult fare to something greater. Hope your toe’s all healed by now. And congratulations on the successful Lasik. 🙂
