This and That

Beautiful sky this evening; dozens of tiny pink clouds on a turquoise sky, merging into a red glow behind the Christmas tree. The weather has held a promise of spring lately, still quite cold but sunny and warm enough to make a start on pruning the roses. I spent two pleasant afternoons in the garden doing them and tidying the flower bed over the weekend.

It was our wedding anniversary last Thursday. We didn’t go out because I wasn’t feeling up to it, so we celebrated with a cake and watched ‘The Mists of Avalon’ on DVD which my daughter bought me for Christmas. I read the book last year. This was the DVD of the TV series which we didn’t get to see in the UK. It was good and well acted but I felt the plot was rather hurried. The series could have been twice as long. The settings disappointed me too. When I read the book I was imagining the actual places, which I have visited, and they didn’t look a bit like the ones on the DVD, especially Glastonbury Tor which was pictured as a rocky cliff where it is actually a grass covered hill. I’m afraid I am a bit fussy about things like that. I couldn’t watch the TV series of ‘Cadfael’ because they filmed it in Eastern Europe and it didn’t look a bit like Shropshire. Also Cadfael is short and fat in the book, doesn’t look at all like Derek Jacobi!

Last week we went to see ‘The Artist’ at the village hall. My son was making fun of us saying did I realise that I could see it in a proper cinema on a big screen with comfy seats! But I quite like going to the village Hall, it’s a social event with tea and cakes afterwards. We both loved the film. The little dog was cute, reminded me of Billie Jean, my daughter’s dog, who is half Jack Russell.

I’m starting to look forward to our holiday in the Lake District in April. We went there five years ago and fell in love with the place. I vowed to go back in the spring to see Wordsworth’s daffodils at Ullswater. Hope the weather is warm by then.
