Talkin’ about real life

“One’s only real life is the life one never leads.”
~ Oscar Wilde

OK, so this ‘fiber-based whole body cleanse’ thing I started? Two words:

“Whoa” and “nelly,” emphasis stronger on “nelly.”

I’m trying to eat better – more raw foods, vegetables, less fat, more lean protein – and I am telling you that even after just a few days I feel lighter. I’m not going to get on the scale again until Sunday night so I don’t know what’s happening weight-wise, but at this point I feel so good the weight part is absolutely secondary.

Now if I could just get my jeans to agree …

I hate harping on it, but it feels good to be taking action rather than doing nothing but whine.

Because there haven’t been any good (read: juicy) DJ-related tidbits to share lately …

He finally has that effing Mustang paid off. I called the loan company just to make sure it’s a done deal because I trust DJ’s meth-addled ass about as far as I can throw it, and I throw like a weak little girl. At this point it’s up to the Sacramento DMV to release the electronic title to him, which will take 4-6 weeks, and then I can sign off on the thing, file a release of liability and be done. Done, done, done.

Well then – that only took a few years. Next project please?

(ok, so that project crack was just a joke, if there are any prankster gods listening. I didn’t mean it!)

So – gym dilemma.

Through my employer’s wellness program, I am eligible for reimbursement of gym fees up to $37/month, provided I get to said gym at least 10 times during the month. Kinda nice, so I’ve been looking at facilities.

There are a few gyms in town that I would consider joining, but only one that is on my way home from work. It would make most sense for me to go to the one that’s on my drive home, but of course that one is by far the most expensive. The other gyms cost much less (the reimbursement would cover the whole fee) but decidedly out of my way, so I would be just that much less likely to make an effort to go, whereas Expensive Gym (Gold’s) is super convenient.

What I’ve been thinking about doing is going to Gold’s and just spending a little money out-of-pocket simply for the convenience. I mean, at least I’d be getting there more often and getting my money’s worth, rather than going to the out-of-the-way place and not hitting my 10-times-a-month goal anyway, thereby sacrificing the company reimbursement altogether.

Plus, I think that since it is a bit on the spendy side, the clientele at Gold’s is much less likely to be snotty college kids who look down their noses at out-of-shape middle-aged women huffing away on the treadmill.

Gym downtown? $35/month
Gold’s Gym? $52/month
Not being humiliated whilst in spinning class and lifting weights? Priceless!

My inner cost-benefit analysis says “Gold’s it is.” $17/month is totally worthwhile for me.

Thanks for reading that drivel, by the way.

So – eating well, exercising more, getting rid of DJ-stress … I’m just trying to take care of myself and hopefully that will reflect in my mood and self-esteem shortly.

Not that I don’t know that I am all that, I just need reminders now and then.

$17 dollars will be TOTALLY worth it.

When you put it that way, $17 really doesn’t seem like much. I’m afraid of Gold’s Gym here, though. There are always a bunch of meatheads in wrestling type clothing hanging out in front. Update on how it goes. Maybe if it’s not a requirement to have blood vessels bulging out of your neck, I’ll do it.

It’s a steal, and a great program from your employer. I find it most interesting that there’s a system in place to encourage use of the benefit.

April 22, 2010

That is a great benefit your company offers along with the “we’ll take the money away” incentive to actually use it.

When I first started going to the gym I use to feel very intimated by what I considered to be the ‘fit people’ but once I fell into a routine and got more comfortable with exercising in front of people those feelings went away. It’s my own personal experience that if the gym isn’t on my way to work or near my home I won’t go so if your anything like me, your decision to go with Gold’s gym is a good one.

Patrick Holford. He holds the key to successful fat burning. Honestly, I’ve never found it easier. He’s a genius.

My gym is kind of spendy, but it’s so pretty and calming that it’s also become my safe place. I did NOT expect that! I make sure I use the amenities so that I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, and I’ve ended up feeling pampered and happy. It’s really lovely.

The biggest obstacle to sticking with a workout program – especially one at a gym – is lack of convenience. I would definitely pay the $17/month because, if Gold’s is right on your way home, it’ll be much less tempting to skip a workout.

April 22, 2010

Maybe you can talk Gold’s into a cheaper deal if you sign up for a long-term contract.

April 22, 2010

$17 seems like a great value, convenience-wise. the gym being convenient is a huge thing for me, too.

Man, I missed a whole slew of DJ-related things… I mean, I gathered that things didn’t go WELL, but when I stopped reading, or got cut out, or cut myself out — y’all were still dating.

i agree, $17 a month is totally worth it. so what are the details on this new fiber diet…are you finding yourself spending more time in the bathroom, lol? i am always curious at what people actually eat when they do the whole raw veggies and high protein stuff….i eat way too many carbs….bread, pasta, more bread, and tons of dairy. so bad yet oh so good, lol. @};————-

So happy to see you’re being so good to yourself. At the risk of sounding like a giant, nut-studded cheeseball…you deserve it. Really.

April 25, 2010

i think it’s worth spending a little more to not go to a cheap gym. hard enough getting motivated to go in the first place, let alone when you’ve got nothing but ghettofabulous to look forward to.
