he turned 6 months old on friday.   wtf?  how’d that happen?   anyway, we took him to the doctor Monday, before our trip and got the latest stats:

– 27.3 inches long (81st percentile)
– 17 lbs, 8 oz (53rd percentile)
– 44-inch head circumference (73rd percentile)

the doc called him a "little porker" and was pleased with his growth progress.   yay!    she was also impressed by how social and happy he is.   that’s my favorite part – he’s always so giggly and sweet when he goes in and all the ladies seem to eat it up.    well, until they stab him in the legs with needles.    definitely not a good time.   this time his little leg swelled on one side and the other bruised.  poor little guy.  he calmed down relatively quickly though, since we now always do a pre-dose of tylenol based on his experience with the first round of shots.  so now he’s done for the next 6 months.   THANK GOD.   this shot business sucks my butt.

so the next day, we dropped him off at aaron’s mom’s house as we prepared to leave for NY/NJ.    it was SO HARD.   his mom is so good with him, but i couldn’t believe how emotional i was THE ENTIRE TRIP.   it started in the car ride to the airport when she sent us a picture of him sleeping and i was overcome and the tears just streamed down my face.

i have to hurry this up so i’ll quickly note some other new developments–

he’s now eating a mixture of baby foods.   we started him with avocado, then banana, then aaron’s mom randomly fed him rice cereal one day.   suprise!   it’s totally fine, but she didn’t exactly give us a heads up first.   and now that we’ve been to the doctor, she said rice cereal is definitely not a food she prefers babies to eat, so we likely won’t keep doing that one.

since then, he’s tried carrots, applesauce and a new concoction called "basil babe" which is apples, basil and greens.   he’s basically consumed all of them, although he seems to prefer carrots and applesauce.  but he likes them a bit warmed up.

the new, fun thing about eating food now is CRAZY DIAPERS.  omg.   he was exclusively consuming breastmilk for the first 5.5 months, so basically he had the same poops for that long.   these new poops are out of this world.   hello.  and they STINK.    but, yay, for fun food!   also, he’s using a sippy cup (kind of) with water to help him digest the new foods.   he thinks he is SO COOL drinking out of a big boy cup and eating big boy foods.   it’s the most adorable and fun thing ever.   i love it.

in general, he is all sorts of awesome and interactive now.   everyday it feels like he learns something new or masters a new skill. it’s amazing.

So awesome. I think 6 months – on has been my favorite stage. It’s when they (or at least Gav) finally get fun and you can start to really play with them and see their little personalities come out. So rad.
