You Have to Laugh…

Ex just called and asked for son.  As is normal, I gave him the phone and left him to take the call in private.  After a few minutes, son came back in the room with the phone and gave me what I can only describe as a "funny" look.

"What’s up?"

"Nothing."

"Yes, there is.  You’ve got that look about you.  What’s happened?"

"Dad just called to wish me happy birthday and to say sorry for missing it last month on 20th August."

Ok.. that’s fine, I have no big issues with ex forgetting son’s birthday; it’s just normal practice.  I even think it’s quite good that he remembered he’d forgotten it and made a call to admit it and apologise.  That’s more than he has previously done.  No, my issue is with the fact that he hasn’t yet missed son’s birthday – his birthday is on 27th September!  Heaven knows where 20th August comes from!

I asked son if he’d corrected his dad and he said he hadn’t; he couldn’t be bothered.

We both just laughed in a kind of incredulous way.

Well bloody hell! That puts my kids’ birthday faux pas into perspective. Holy shit a father that can’t remember his own son’s birth date? Diabolical!

my dad forgot my birthday this year ….. I phoned and thanked him for the card that hadn’t turned up and he seemed quite shocked that I might be upset about it!

Entering a plea of guilty for a crime you didn’t commit…not so smart.
