Review of Work Week One

Week one is done!

Summary:  Monday group is lovely, Wednesday group is not quite so lovely but still nice and Thursday’s group is a mixture of ok and horrible.  But because there are so many in Thursday’s group, the ok ones fade into the background and all I can remember are the horrible 60+%.

On Monday and Wednesday I came home on a high, full of energy and enthusiasm.  The lesson plans had worked like a dream and all the young people engaged.  On Thursday, I came home depressed and slept the afternoon away (missing a meeting with my boss in the other job, but at the time, I couldn’t have cared less).

Yesterday (Friday) morning, I opened my emails and read this from the county’s accreditations manager:

"Thought you might be interested in delivering this – 20 weeks x 2 hours based in Colchester and/or Tendring.  I know it’s a long way for you but as they are desperate you can name your own price + travel.  The venue is a care home with staff who need to brush up on their grammar and spelling of work related words."

It’s ESOL which I haven’t done since training, but if they’re desperate….  Anyway, I submitted a tender with a respectably (er… disgustingly) high hourly rate and will just wait and see.  It’s a pilot scheme for essential skills and will help the county to respond to the Leitch Report and Skills Pledge (meaning they’ve probably got lots of funding at the moment).

Whether anything comes of it or not, is, at the moment, irrelevant.  It showed me there is other stuff out there and it’s only a matter of time until I can abandon the Thursday oiks and their greed-ridden co-ordinator.

I have to go with it for now, though; I need the wages.  But I’m being proactive in trying to get out.

On Tuesday, I’m meeting with a contact in a local school.  Contacts are useful.  I shall also let her know I’m looking to replace my Thursday job.

Gizza job!

Are you a teacher, per chance? I admire teachers…I hated most of school and could never imagine going back. You are brave!

ooh, well I hope you get the disgustingly high rate you asked for and that you can move on from the Thursday group.

Strange how each group or class can have such a different impact on teachers. One personality can change everything. I would be for the less stress choice of teaching.

Might need a domestic broker sometime soon, but your commuting costs would be on the high side!

Oh, good luck with your tender! It would be so good if you could leave that Thursday class.

Thanks for your note! To answer your question, I am studying law. The Institute of Legal Executives course. I am doing my last exams for the course.

You’ll find a better job, soon. I hope your outrageous bid for the EOSL is accepted.

Thank you, not sweet person. It was reassuring to get a note so soon on an entry not well thought out. I admire so much your ability to give to the needs you see.

We have some mutual OD friends .. I came out of lurkdom to say how much I enjoy your diary – you are doing something I am trying to prepare myself to do.
