I really started reading this book because over the Holiday break my boy and I watched the Dune and Children of Dune mini series and I really enjoyed it. As I was promised the book was better, I picked it up.
Personally I have not read a lot of Science-Fiction, but this was probably the best book to draw me into the genera. Not only is it well written, the cultures of the other planets are well and fully developed and are quite fascinating to read about. Even more of the cultures can be read in the appendixes to the book I discovered at the end – which also is really interesting.
Taking place sometime in the future (as all good Sci-Fi books do) the solar system is run by greed and corruption, and the “coin” of the realm is Spice, which can only be found an the desert planet of Araakis – referred to many as simply Dune.
The story follows young Paul Atreides as he is forced to grow up on Dune after his father, Duke Leto Atreides is commanded by the Emperor to take over the planet and nothing goes as anyone hopes or wishes…
The most interesting part to me is the order of the Bene Gesserits, of which Paul’s mother – Jessica – was a member. Their role in the religion, economics, and politics of this world I just find fascinating (for obvious reasons if you know me and have read the book).
I’m going to read the rest of the series, and very happily so.
Fortunately, it’s a looong series. So you have a lot of good stuff ahead of you 🙂 I really liked Children of Dune the best, possibly because I got my hands on it first at a young and impressionable age. And yeah, the BG litany against fear has gotten me thru a lot. Mexico for one. Cutting bait in Washington for another.

My goodness, I knew it was a long series, as Frank Herbert’s son took it over after he died, but didn’t realise it was as long as 12! I’m one of the few fans of the film, the uncut version that is. I’ve got the first book, it’s my second copy. I had it before, started to read it, but I accidentally left it in the bar at uni and when I went back to get it, it had gone. Got a replacement, but not got round to restarting it again. It’s part of my ever growing list of books I’ve bought that need to be read.

I think I am going to do the 12 in 12 challenge as well. 🙂
