The Silk-Like Tradgedy
Oh, the horror! I don’t know if I should survive! The silk-like fabric I was going to use for my pantaloons can’t be used for pantaloons! I’m going to have to find something else to use instead! This is just a last minute frustration I didn’t need! I need some nice pantaloons! I need them for the show.
Why, you might ask, can I not use that beautiful color for my pantaloons? I simply have too much fabric. I have eleven whole yards in two sections. I couldn’t possibly cut four yards off that to make pantaloons! That would be horrible! I couldn’t possible do that. Not when I have enough to make a fourteen yard skirt with it!
It’s this lovely, light flowey fabric. It just kind of floats. It would make a really nice veil. However, I don’t have need for a pink veil, even if it’s a deliciously deep fushia. However, that kind of float and lift would make an incredible skirt. It would just spin and drift so well. It would tuck up so nicely to create a big, ruffling bottom layer under my big charcoal gray skirt. That would give me so much more form to the depth of the skirt rather than simply hanging with a little bit of ruffel. It would also have a bright shock of color underneath.
So my mind has been made up. A skirt it will be. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it. No one else will have a skirt of such a brilliant color. No one else will have a skirt that flows like mine does. It’s going to be quite an impressive project, even if no one notices it’s beauty but me. That’s one thing I like about finally starting to make my own costumes. They can be entirely me. They’re something crafted by me, for me, and to be worn by me for pursuing my own art. What can I say? It’s all about me.
So that leaves me with one problem. What do I do for my pantaloons? They’re one of the few parts that are essential to have before the show in October. I’ve already got one skirt. I’ve got a bra-top, though I’d like to replace it. I’ve got a belt if it really comes down to it. The choli has also already been made. However, I don’t have patnaloons that will work, so I need to get those done in time.
This costume is certainly going to be bright. I’ve got a beautiful purple tone for the choli. The fringe belt is going to be a beautiful teal velvet. I’m going to cover a bra or bra forms with midnight blue satin. I’m going to use a deep blue velvet for the jingle belt. Now I’m going to add a fushia skirt under my gray one. It’s going to be very bright and colorful without being obnoxious. Better yet, when I finally make the finished version, I’m going to make the another skirt so that nothing on the costume will be in black. I think I’ll even make myself some falls that are threaded on something with color rather than black. After that I’ll just have to make a base for a turban and some pretty layers for it and I’ll have a complete ATS costume.
So I’ve added another fabric to the mix. The fabric I used to make corde’s first choli is now being used to make my pantaloons. At one point I had something like nine yards of it. Now I’m down to just about three. It’s going to be slightly narrow for pantaloons, but I can work with that. There’s nothing that says I have to use a full four yards for pantaloons. I think losing half a yard off of each side won’t make too much of a difference. Besides, I can eventually make myself a bigger pair for when I want something a little more full. I’m sure no one will even know the difference. If nothing else, they’ll barely get a good enough view to notice the difference!
I must be completely out of my mind. I’ve got to make two costumes for myself by the end of October as well as at least one costume for Corde. She wants to be a mermaid. I’m hoping I can convince her to be a Gypsy instead. Then she could use it for the renn faire as well. Granted, she could probably wear a mermaid costume as well, but in reality, I’d rather her get a costume that she can wear more than once. I’d like to have something she can use with more frequency, and if I make her a tribal dance costume, I can modify it to fit her as she grows. It makes so much more sense. Besides, it means I only have to make four costumes, not five. At least Aris’s is going to be pretty easy. I’ll just make him some pantaloon type pants and a vest for when it’s warm. Once it starts getting cold I can make him a little shirt to go with it. It’ll be really easy.
Well, I need to go get some stuff done. I should make some tassels for Corde. I’ve got to make some more tassels for my own belt. I need to figure out what I’m doing for lunch today. I’ve got to start working on my costume as well. I hope I have some thread for those pantaloons. If not, I’m going to be buying some today so I can get those done. They’re kind of essential to the costume right now.
