One Day at a Time
Why does having a cold for me, always mean being flat on my back? When I was a child, in grade school, I got colds all the time, I never missed a day of class. Colds just meant sniffling, coughing, maybe a stuffy nose. But my colds in adulthood are much worse than my youth (or maybe I have an incorrect memory). Luckily, I am off from work today and tomorrow, so no need to call in. But will things improve by Friday? I just don’t know. I just can’t imagine working like this. I mean, I did work, feeling like this yesterday, and it was rough. I mean, my job isn’t hard labor exactly, but it’s also not an office job. I have to be on my feet all day, and I’m a guy, so I’m expected to pick up heavy boxes, TV’s, etc. When you feel like shit, as I do now, and when your muscles ache . . . how the hell is lifting and being on your feet all day comfortable? It’s not. But maybe something doesn’t have to be comfortable to be doable. Maybe I’m just lazy.
I know colds can last for a week or two. Hopefully the worst of the symptoms will be gone after 2-3 days though. I think that’s generally how it works . . . the worst of the symptoms (aches, fatigue) will last a couple of days then the residual stuff like stuffy nose and congestion will last for days, maybe weeks. The biggest saving grace today is that I got a ton of sleep last night. I would be feeling great this evening if not for this cold.

PS: I believe it was February of 2010 the last time I was sick with anything, and it also, was a cold. So, once a year or so . . . . (occasionally twice).
PPS: Let it be known that I no longer believe that "running in cold weather can cause you to catch a cold" is an old wives tale. It was amazing how my symptoms started immediately after my long run on Sunday night. Honestly, I probably would have gotten it anyway. I am sure the run aggravated the initial symptoms though. I don’t know when I will run again. I know I have supporters on here that may like to see me push through this and stick with the plan. But I have to take care of myself. That’s the number one thing. It’s not like I had a set race date, anyway.
No I would not like for you to “push through and stick with the plan”. I think you’re being pretty hard on yourself to even think that you’re lazy. I hope you get well really soon.

Hold up. I don’t for a minute think you got sick because of the temps. The immune system is suppressed after a long run – that’s why many people get bad colds after a marathon. (Look it up! It’s true!) Chances are large you were already susceptible of your cold, and it got you because you don’t sleep enough! lol Yes, the worst symptoms will be for 2-3 days, so take it easy, lay off the soda (!), and drink a lot of water. Feel better soon! 🙂

PS – don’t “push through” if you don’t feel well. Exercise in general gives us stronger immune systems, so I’m sure you’ll bounce back in no time. Rest and run when you’re ready.
