Dave Matthews ‘Some Devil’

In a note, Ducky asked me what I thought of his first single ‘Gravedigger’. I’ll just give you a review of the entire cd and some favorite lines, ok? 🙂 I kind of suck at these but *shrug* too bad.

Dodo – Lyrically this songs stumbles a bit. Some of it just doesn’t flow well. One particular part I find trouble with is “If all the things that you are saying now/Were true enough but still what was I worrying around” No flow, no rhythm. Overall, could be better, could be worse.

So Damn Lucky – Great beat, easily one of my favs on the cd. “Oh my God/wait and see/What will soon become of me?/This frozen heart/Screaming wheels/But does that screaming come from me?”

Gravedigger – I’ve heard this song evolve over the past year and a half, that may be part of the reason I like it so much. It’s a dark, heart wrenching song which is what Dave does best. If you haven’t seen the video yet, please do. Dave looks very yummy 🙂

Some Devil – There is no way for me to pick some fav lines from this song….I love them all. Great guitar riffs.

Trouble – Eh. I don’t much care for this song but I haven’t been able to pin it on one specific reason.

Grey Blue Eyes – There is not much to this song as far as lyrics go. It’s a loved you then lost you song “Don’t forget my broken heart /You remember it from the start/You made it and it’s all a part/Of your grey blue eyes”. It’s another song lacking a kick.

Save Me – Now here is a song that is very ‘Dave’. This is the type of song I can see Dave performing. It’s got attitude, spunk. Rumors say this will be the next single from the album and I think it’s a great choice. “You don’t need to prove a thing to me/Just give me faith,/make me believe/Come on, save me/Save me, mister walking man/If you can”

Stay or Leave – I heard this song for the first time when Dave was touring with Tim Reynolds and was blown away. I see this as a beautiful, make you smile love song. One of my fav song on this cd. “Winter’s warming you and I/Kissing whiskey by the fire/With the snow outside/And when the summer comes in the river/Swims at midnight shiver cold/Touch the bottom starry night with muddy toes”

An’ Another Thing – This was a song I was really looking forward to hearing. Dave reworked an old, never released song ‘Little Thing’. He should have left it alone. Talk about a disappointment.

Oh – Awwwwww. That the only way I can think of to describe this song. It’s cute, sweet. “I love you oh so well/Like a kid loves candy and fresh snow/I love you oh so well/Enough to fill up heaven, overflow, and fill hell”

Baby – The Seattlemusic Group is what makes this good song great. The string section gives it a dreamy quality. If the rumors are right and this song was written as a lullaby for his daughters, it works perfectly. “A ship in a bottle won’t sail/All we can do is dream that the wind will blow us across the water/A ship in a bottle set sail/Baby, it’s all right/Stop your crying, now”

Up and Away – Nothing great, but it’s not bad. For that reason, I don’t have much to say about it 😉

Too High – Good song, but not my style. I’m having a hard time getting into this song…but it’s growing on me. “How’d you leave it with the love you lost?/You made them crawl to be without you”

The last track is Gravedigger acoustic.

The whole cd is a great representation of DM’s personality; sweet, sensitive but sometimes brooding and dark.

If you buy this cd with the expectation of a DMB feel to it, you will be let down. He flexed his wings with this cd and did a damn fine job. I’m excited to see how these songs come together live.

Sorry for the lengthy answer Ducky!

I love DMB, Dave, tim, Bela and everyone. Pretty much any of the CD’s I’ve bought from them I’ve liked. For different reason or another. Some Devil, my favorite song is the acoustic Gravedigger. It’s much more emotional, it gives me the chills. Great album though. few shakey songs (Dod takes some getting used to, i agree not the best) but otherwise very good. =D
