Took the first steps toward becoming a nurse!

Friday, I decided to get the ball rolling on going back to school.  I called and set up an interview.

Saturday, I went to the school, took a tour (!!!) and took a test.  I asked my Mom to come with me.  She wants to be a nurse, too, and I wanted to see if I could at least get her interested.  It would be so cool to go through this journey with her.

Funny story–I was talking about my educational history with the Admissions lady, and her son and I went to the same high school!  Also, her son went to, and graduated from, the college.  Her son had an accident a few years ago, he hit a tree.  He had to have his leg amputated.  Now, he has a prosthetic.

The Admissions coordinator said there wold be 3 tests, each lasting about 12 minutes.  She set me up on the test, and her and my Mom left the room.  As soon as I was finished, the Admissions lady came back in, said she was going to get my results, and to sit tight.  My Mom came in about a minute after her, then the Admissions lady came in.  She had a huge smile on her face.  She said "Guess what?  You don’t have to take the other 2 tests because you passed this one with flying colors!"  That was so exciting for me.

Then we took the tour.  The school is pretty big.  There is a dental facility, and you can go there and let the students work on you.  Even if you arent a student.  It’s cheaper than going to a dentist, and I have had lots of problems with my teeth.  Good to know.

There are lots of dolls for the nursing students to practice on.  There’s one named Noell who gives birth, placenta and all.  It hollers and everything.  An instructor sits on the other side of a 2-way mirror and after you’re done, you go to a debriefing room where they tell you what you did right and what you can improve on.  There’s another one named Einstein, and it can bleed, sweat, and do all bodily functions humans can do.

The only thing is, you have to go to school to be an LPN there.  You can go from LPN to RN, but you can’t go straight for RN.  I’m not sure that’s the route I want to take.  I’ll research it this week and make sure I’m not making a mistake.

I am set up to go take my HESI exam Friday!  Got a study book and everything.

Friday, I went to my neurologist.  Physically, everything is normal, which is what my PCP told me.  The migraines still suck.  My PCP prescribed me Imitrex, which was expensive.  I asked the neurologist to prescribe me something other than Imitrex, something that would cost less.  He prescribed Maxalt, Rizatriptan, and Cambria.  That combination was about $500.  Needless to say I did not get any of them.  I have been getting by with samples of Cambria that they gave me.  There are samples of that at my job, too, so I’m going to ask my boss if I can have a few of them.  My PCP prescribed Zofran for nausea, and that was $126.  I may pick up half of those.  My neurologist prescribed promethazine, and that was much cheaper, at only $6.  I did get that, but they make me sleepy, so I can take those if I’m home, but not at work.  That’s why I’ll shell out $60 for some Zofran.  I wish they had some samples to give me.  Actually, we are having a drug rep come by with a new anti nausea medicine called diclegis.  Hopefully, she’ll bring samples of those.  I just need health insurance!  That’s the one thing that I don’t like about my job, is that they don’t offer it.

I just got off the phone with my Mom.  She invited me to go to a drag queen show with her.  Haha!  I love that woman!  BTW, we’re gonna go:)

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Whoa! We didn’t have a birthing mother doll at my nursing school! Doesn’t it suck that most medical offices don’t actually offer…uh…medical coverage? When I tell people that they always act super surprised, like because you’d think DOCTORS would realize how important it is! As for the LPN or RN thing. If I had to do it again, I’d just go straight for the RN. LPN school was no easier. It was actually harder because if I had failed a single one of the big tests at any time I would have gotten kicked out. (I don’t know if all LPN schools are like that). If I had gone to the community college for RN, I could just take a class over if I failed. The one good thing I can say about getting the LPN first & then the RN is that you can maintain both licenses. So if anything ever happens and your RN license got revoked or suspended, you’d still be able to work as an LPN. Good luck whichever you decide to do!
