I’m reading the work of a friend of mine. He’s a war correspondent , now writing for Huffington Post. He’s a creative, wildly so. His writing is passionate or at least overtly poetic in a combat zone kind of way. I was just imagining what it would be like to live with someone like that. Someone who not only encouraged creativity but lived it with gusto to the point of obsession.

I had this vision of someone who came home occasionally, smelling of dessert and napalm, sitting up all night around the kitchen table chain smoking cigarettes and consuming vodka or gallons of wine as he discussed the future of the world before running off the next day for some other war-torn country. Why is that romantic? Why do I like that? That’s how I think of Tom, although he has children, single, loves to cook and lives for coffee.  He’s bright, creative and endlessly optimistic. “Life’s too short,” he says after all the destruction and violence he’s witnessed.  I still have this almost clichéd-film-noir-image of the scruffy-dirty-tempestuous-artist….boy if I weren’t married, I’d be in trouble!

The coffee hyperactivity would drive you mad!! He’s probably the reflection of all the parts of yourself you’ve suppressed to be who you are now.

Sounds like many who live on the edge…

You perceive him as being romantic simply because you don’t live with him and don’t witness all his bad habits. Since for him “life’s too short” he wouldn’t want to waste it doing useless things such as cleaning up after himself, thus taking years off Your life with the stress of putting up with the mess.

If you reek of napalm, lighting a cigarette is probably not such a good idea. (Not that lighting one is EVER a good idea.)

Reminds me of a quote by Jonathan Swift: May you live every day of your life! I think he represents freedom and adventure…wonderful fantasy material 🙂

Ah, the lure of the unknown, that “grass on the other side of the fence” thing. He probably sees himself as quite ordinary.
