Marriage blessing

My daughter got married yesterday. She held it outside in a little fairy garden in the cold. There were only 17 invited guests to the ceremony, just close family and friends. L & C call each other ‘bunny’ so in part of the ceremony the officiant read from The Velveteen Rabbit (of course the invitations and announcements had bunnies).

Afterwards we went to a restaurant where we were met by other guests totaling about 50. It was cozy, fun, sweet and silly. My daughter and her husband did not go for anything traditional, especially her dress. It was short purple and asymmetric . She looked adorable in it and was far freer to move about and be social during the party. The cake had two knitted bunnies dressed in purple and the party favor at the table was a paper carrot filled with chocolate coffee beans and nuts.

I talked to people I hadn’t seen for years and enjoyed a French martini with fantastic appetizers and a dinner of moule et frites. It was a delight all the way around including allowing my ex-husband’s wife, Colleen, who organized the whole thing from beginning to end. She was truly an untiring magician. My ex and I are quite friendly so the event had no uncomfortable moments, it was one big happy family….so sweet.

Colleen is a high end interior architect who, last night, offered to redesign our kitchen which we’ve been struggling with for about two years…and then she said it would take her about five hours. I thought for a moment and she quickly said, "five hours not five days, I’ll do it for free!!" Wow! I’m tickled to death, I’ve always loved her eye, contemporary and slick….can’t wait!

This was my blessing written just a few hours before hand. I didn’t know I was supposed to speak but the poem was met with applause and tears. "Departing the text" in the last line is from a favorite children’s book that my daughter understood…the message is, when you depart the text (reading between the lines or making up your own story) is when the best things happen.  The bunnies were part of the piece I handed them.

Stand apart like two tall trees,

unique and separate souls, side by side

there to support the other.

When the wind blows and the earth shakes, bend and sway with their rhythm, counting on each other’s strengths to pull you through.

Dance with laughter when the leaves tickle and the snowflakes melt on your nose,

and always remember to depart the text when no one is looking.

Simply elegant, and not having to organize a bit. The word wonderful comes to mind. Lovely poem. Now you are a mother-in-law! Another chapter in life begins. Congratulations. BTW, w.a.y. cool about the kitchen.

Sounds like a beautiful day. Congratulations!

Sounds like a simply fantastic time! Congratulations!!!I’m a fan of making one’s wedding individual, non-conformist, personal, and unique. How rare and lovely the tension-less relationship with the ex and his wife, and how inspiring that she will do the design for free!

Ohhh! Lovely. All of it. Congratulations. I was just thinking about rereading the Velveteen Rabbit for a poem idea. 🙂
