What a treat to connect with someone. As I get older I find it gets harder. People are busy. They have families and work. They have illnesses and issues. Then, every once in a while there’s a connection made that’s light and easy.
I see this person at work. She’s one of my favorite on camera journalists, who at first, because of her beauty, incredible intelligence, with four or five languages under her skinny belt and sexy wavy blonde hair was threatening. Her features are delicate and to top it off she’s British with that accent that can melt stone. I thought she would be uppity, snobby, self-involved and cold. I’m ashamed of myself for pre-judging, and will admit (reluctantly because I feel stupid) jealousy. How can a slightly overweight (but doing ok), Jewish, New Yorker, brunette, artist, not be jealous of someone like that? I ask you? Well, I was and I’m stupid.
Do you watch the BBC reports on public television? Or listen to Diane Reem on the public radio. It’s Katy Kay that I’m talking about. I love her. She comes on Meet the Press often these days, (for new readers I do the makeup for that show) and over the years I’ve gotten to know this lovely, down to earth person. She describes a vacation home in the country where in the summer she prefers playing with her kids in the creek, getting all muddy, or hanging about the house painting or re-hanging doors and cleaning windows in her cottage in France (ok,that’s hard for most of us to imagine, but….) much more than doing the-inside-the-beltway-political-social-go-round. I know who wouldn’t love that?
But…anyway…it’s been a treat to get to know some of these crazily brilliant journalists and I love connecting with some of them. Today was particularly delightful with Katy, we laughed at what we didn’t know and agreed on what we did….special.
It really does get harder to really connect with new people as we get older and everyone makes themselves so busy. I’m happy you have made this connection.

Friends can be found in truly strange places. Be well, my friend.

I had to do a search, as I didn’t recognise the name, but I do watch BBC World Report, whenever I get a TV signal. I have seen her on that show. And since when are you “slightly overweight (but doing ok)?” Be well, my friend.

just discovered your OD. Love your artwork! I’m 34 and I too find it difficult to connect with new people. I must do that though, b/c w/out connections to others, we don’t have much

In your profile pic, you do not look “slightly over weight” you look very fit and trim… You are one surprise after another.. now I’ll have to start watching Meet The Press….just so I can see your handiwork….

Not someone we see here, but glad you got on so well with her. The old ‘can’t judge a book by its cover’ thing again, eh?

Isn’t it special to make a new connection! How good that you have.
