Drear of Gethsemane
With Simon having just vowed to never fall away
And Jesus’ righteous contradiction of Simon’s vow,
The Lord entered the Garden in much anguish to pray
That the cup of crucifixion would pass Him somehow.
Not like in Eden where mankind’s life had begun,
But in Gethsemane where peril was on its way –
Though it was for this purpose to earth Christ had come,
He dreaded s e p a r a t i o n from God without delay.
The soul of the Messiah was overwhelmed with grief;
His life for a single sinner meant His life for everyone;
An appointment with the Cross; on either side a thief,
He knew what His heart desired yet the Father’s will be done.
An angel of God strengthened Him, and when He arose from prayer
He met the guards and then received a kiss from His betrayer.
