“Ordinary World” Part 2
One night a boy with black hair and empty eyes sat by a window. But instead of staring up at the stars in the sky, his gaze was locked upon the cold, unforgiving ground, far below. Inside his tired, tormented mind, the boy entertained a simple thought:
All of my happiness is lost. In its place, is a pain that I cannot bare……..
If I flew out of this window and fell, the ground would be there to meet me, welcoming me in it’s hard embrace. No one would miss me. No one would care. It’s not an end, just a new path……
With his decision made, the boy climbed to the window’s ledge and looked down. He could almost see death, sneering at him triumphantly from below, waiting. In one last deep breath, he said his silent goodbyes. Then, without a sound from his parted lips, he heard a scream. A wail of agony so tremendous it sliced through the numbness that held the boy captive and made him hesitate. As the screams rippled over each other in waves of intense pain, the boy forgot all about himself and his own hurt.
Suddenly, he knew that he had to find the voice behind the screams. Someone was calling to him, crying out for help. Without another thought, he dashed out into the night. He ran through the darkness, hardly knowing what he was searching for. Rain fell hard, soaking him through his skin and he shivered. Abruptly the screaming stopped, followed by an echo of permanent silence. In that moment, the boy knew what it meant to feel afraid. He feared he was too late. Then, as he rounded the corner, he saw what he had been looking for.
A figure was crouched by the riverbed. A small, fragile looking girl, covered in mud. The boy approached her cautiously, lest he frighten her. But her back was turned; so she did not see him there. Gently, he reached out, eager to see her face.
Startled by his touch, she jumped and whirled around in a circle. Her breath rushed in and out of her lungs in a wild rush.
Her eyes widened in fear. She shot to her feet and tried to run, but she didn’t get far. Her legs gave out and she stumbled, falling heavily into the boy’s arms. She began to struggle, and he had to shout to be heard over the wind.
“Easy! Easy. I’m not going to hurt you!”
She stilled when the boy spoke. Looking up into his face, her fear drained away. He felt her body sigh with relief as she slipped into unconsciousness.
When her eyes slid closed, the rain stopped and the wind stilled to a gentle breeze.
