advice needed – citalopram
I’ve finally succumbed to antidepressants. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience of taking citalopram (cipramil)?
Do you gain weight?
Can you drink alcohol while taking them?

I took those back in first year of uni so… more than 3 years ago. I don’t know about the alcohol thing but they made me really nauseous for the first week and then I felt numb after that as well as suicidal. But I don’t know how common my experiences are.

you’re not really meant to drink. but it won’t make you explode. but really its counter productive since alcohols a depressant and all. i think they’re ok, no horror stories. and don’t think they make you gain weight. don’t you have a BNF you can check in?? i think its good you’re getting help, they’re not forever, but if you get some counselling it might help to be on the meds too to kick start things. and i think you really need to think about what you’re doing with the bloke. its tying you to all the bad things.

citalopram was the first antidepressant I was prescribed, and it made me worse. Usually, there is a settling in period where they make you more depressed, before they make you better. But Citalopram was TERRIBLE for me. It made me very, very suicidal. I wouldnt go back to it. Ever. But everyone has different experiences. Though looking at these other notes, they didnt work well for people here either.

just incase you decide you want to change pills, Mirtazapine is also a bad one. That one pretty much knocks you out. About ten minutes after taking it, you cant keep your eyes open, and fall asleep. I was sleeping all night and nearly all day. I’ve been on Sertraline for the last three years, and it’s been very effective. I dont know how well other people take to it, but I have nothing but good things to say about it. Sertraline is prescribed for OCD, anxiety and panic attacks, as well as depression, so it’s treats quite a range of symptoms.

I’m on cipramil at the moment, I’ve been on it for… just over a month now, and I felt sick and exhausted for the first week/two weeks but then I felt fairly normal. I still get tired after taking them, but I haven’t really noticed too much of a change in my mood either. Maybe it takes me longer to snap at things, so I guess that’s a beneficial result. And I still drink on them, so who knows!

I don’t know about this particular drug…but you need to at least give it 21 days…which isn’t easy…I know from experience that it takes time for the effects to set in and usually, we, the depressed, won’t give it the time it needs. Hang in there and if after a month or so, you feel really weird….have your doctor change it…just don’t go cold turkey. I care about you pinkfish.

Those were the first antidepressants that were prescribed to me when I was first diagnosed with depression in 2000. They didn’t make me gain weight at all, I was teetotal at the time, but I guess I wouldn’t recommend drinking on them. Hopefully they will lift your mood enough to help you start being able to cope with things without getting drunk? I didn’t have any horrible side effects, only ..

I kept having to yawn but I couldn’t finish the yawn, if that makes sense? Very frustrating! I don’t want to give scare you but I also felt really numb eventually and then suicidal (and made a suicide attempt) and was changed to something else. Make sure you see your GP regularly to monitor you. If you take them with a snack then that helps the nausea you might feel. All the best xx

I look these, they were the last ones I actually took before coming off them, because I felt better. So they did work for me. Prozac made me feel worse and tofranil made me attempt suicide on them, so all in all citalopram was a hit for me. I never gained weight on them, plus my ED behaviours went away for a while. I also drank lots on them (not a BRILLIANT idea) but I was fine anyway. Good luck.
