Required “First Day of Class” entry

9:10 AM brought a walk up the mini-hill for a sleepy Holly and me. She detoured to Heide and I went to Heyer. Let’s just say that Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences is going to be VERY cool. The professor LOVES to talk and is very intense. But nice. He loves to ask questions and I think that’s so wonderful in a teacher. I know that I’m going to be caught off guard by all of it for a few class periods, but that will pass quickly. The reading looks incredibly cool, albeit hard. This class will, by far, involve the most work and require the most effort. But I know I can do it.

I also ran into Keith after class, yay! He has a class after me in the same room.

Math 143 brought an unexpected surprise – Chris! 🙂 That will definitely improve Finite Mathematics! The professor is from Kenya, and is the sweetest little man. He’s very nice and encouraging, which makes me really want to learn this stuff, and you all know how much I hate math! This class may get trickier after a bit, but for now the homework is pretty easy.

After class, Chris took me out to the parking lot to see his new Ford – black and BEAUTIFUL! I am SO jealous!

Next was Creative Writing. I love the teacher, for many reasons –

1) She’s a published poetry, fiction, and non-fiction author
2) She’s “artsy”
3) She’s inspiring
4) She is super sweet
5) She reminds me of my second mommy (Ani’s mom)!

We wrote little story bits for introductions instead of the usual bland “name/major/hometown” schpiel. I liked it – but as we went around the class reading what we’d written, it occurred to me that many people didn’t understand what the teacher wanted us to do. Many of the stories were just detailed, drawn out versions of the cliche introduction, not really stories at all. I tried to be creative and wrote mine as an introspective dialogue – and managed to slip in the fact that Janesville is a very boring place to live! 😉 This class will not be difficult in the way Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences will be, but it will still be challenging and time consuming. But I am incredibly excited about it and am ready to give it my all. As my teacher says, it will be a “writing workout.”

After a nice lunch with Mark, a lengthy break, and a short walk, it was time for the supposed class from Hell – the 2 and 1/2 hour, was-supposed-to-be-on-the-Internet Intro to Philosophy class. But, surprise, it was wonderful! The professor is the dean of L&S and has a Masters and a Ph.D in Philosophy, so he’s INCREDIBLE wordly. It’s awesome. He’s a sweet, short, stocky little bald man who I find myself smiling at constantly. I love teachers like that! Having this background in philosophy will ease the burden of the natural and social sciences philosophy and will also be just plain interesting. Plus, Mark’s in the class with me, so studying will be fun. 😉

After class was homework time, then dinner, and now I’m hanging out in Jonny and Billy’s room with Jonny, watching “American Idol,” while Billy and Mark play Halo in Mark and Austin’s room. And after that will be homework (I suppose) and a nice bit of sleeping in tomorrow. 🙂
