Sharing music with the little fella
Yesterday, I did something really fun with Ethan… and this was also after we returned from going downtown. Ethan wasn’t in the mood to watch something on TV, and he makes this abundently clear by actually walking over and hitting the button that turns off the tube. So since he was in a dancing mood earlier that day with the dude downtown with the fiddle, I looked up some Celtic music online and put it on for him. Ethan started to dance around the living room and have a good time. I then set my MP3 player on the computer to random, curious to see what songs Ethan would dance to and what songs would make him run away. An interesting song Ethan couldn’t get enough of was one of the main instrumental pieces from ‘Lord of the Dance’, which seemed fitting since he was dancing up a storm that day.
Another thing I found interesting is when I played some songs that had repeating lyrics, Ethan would start to sing that repeating part back as the song went on. Example: when I was playing ‘Stayin’ Alive’ by the Bee Gees, halfway through the song he started shouting out ‘Staying Alive’ to sing withg the song. It was very cute…
This repeating of song lyrics pretty much landed me in hot water as well, cause some songs that Ethan loved dancing to was hip hop and rap songs. Turns out he likes the beat and bass of them. Leah came out into the room to see what was going on. Ethan walked up to Leah and said to her “Baby got back…” and I’ll tell you, the look on Leah’s face when he repeated that Sir Mix-A-Lot lyric back to her was priceless. That evil ‘I’m going to kill you in your sleep’ glare I got after that was quite amusing as well too…
One song that had Ethan really running around and dancing was ‘Shiney Happy People’ by REM. I don’t know what disgusted Leah the most… the fact that Ethan liked the song and danced to it or that I still remember and sang every lyric of the song when he was dancing.
I’ve been doing this for a while, seeing what music would inspire him to move around what wouldn’t I can’t wait to see what kind of music Jonathan would jump around to when he gets older, but he seems to be smitten to the Backyardigans right now… which is interesting. Ethan seems to have what I think is bitchin’ taste in music, but that’s just my opinion.
I hope everyone had a good friday, and I’ll see be back tomorrow! Until then, take care.
Peter
We always played music at the dinner table (I actually installed speakers in the dining room for just this purpose) every night, and played everything from jazz t ocountry to classical to rock and back again. It exposed my girls to a LOT of different music, and now they all have what I think is a very good ear for music of all types. They especially loved hearing classical music they first heard on the old Looney Tunes cartoons, which is precisely how I developed my taste for classical. I think that imprinting varied music tastes early in their life gives them a more richly varied taste for music later in life.
Warning Comment
