Post Golden Globes ’06 entry,…
Usually when the Globes come around, I usually make an entry to predict who I thought was going to win. Due to a lot of work and two kids to take care of, it slipped my mind and of course all the films I thought would win… did. Only when I don’t post a list of predictions is when this happens. I should make a note to skip next year’s predictions too. Usually the Golden Globes are off the charts and make bold choices, but the winners here were easy to pick. I do think however, the best movies won out that night, and I would be super happy if this exact list are the winners we see come Oscar night. So since I didn’t post a prediction, I’ll do a mini recap of some of the winners:
Brokeback Mountain: Winner of Best Dramatic Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Song
I’ve actually heard nothing but good things about this movie from the friends who wrote about it, so I’m gonna have to give it a look when it comes to the island (not here yet). I think it’s cool that despite all the hype for movies like King Kong and Narnia, that this is the movie that comes out on top with the critics and hopefully the oscars are next. Ang Lee is a sensational director so it’s no surprise that this movie is doing as well as it is. There is a good chance he might win his second Oscar for directing, the other going to ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’
Walk The Line: Winner of Best Comedy/Musical Picture, Best Comedy/Musical Actor, Best Comedy/Musical Actress
I’ve actually seen this movie, and I can assure you that these awards were well deserved, and if Brokeback Mountain doesn’t win the Oscar for best picture, this movie should.
Best Supporting Actor: George Clooney, “Syriana”
One of the most interesting speeches of the night. George got the night off on a rather interesting foot when it took the time to thank Jack Abramoff. It was one of the funnier moments of the night, and I guess the GOP can forget about keeping Jack’s name name quiet in the media. I’m sure there will be many downloads going on this week as people who don’t know already-will say, Jack who?
Best Foreign-Language Film: “Paradise Now” (Palestine)
I’m sure this was a very contraversal choice, but it’s a movie that has been getting a lot of buzz lately. A film about two palestinian men who are ordered to conduct suicide bombings in Isreal is sure to turn a few heads, especially now that its getting awards, but I’m hearing that it’s a moving character piece that is more than just black & white. Paradise Now is going to be screening here on the Island in March so I might take a moment to check it out.
The TV Awards:
There wasn’t too many surprises in the TV field. Lost and Desperate housewives was clearly the favorites going in and they walked out with the top awards.
– I laughed my ass off when four of the five nominated women from Desparate Housewives were all beat out by the last nomination in the category… which isn’t surprising since I am sure the people trying to support that show split the vote between the four actresses to the point where it was impossible for any of them to win.
– Hugh Laurie taking best dramatic actor for House was very appropreiate especially since he was robbed at the Emmys. His speech was quite entertaining as well…
– It was nice to see Commander in Cheif win an award for best dramatic actress for Geena Davis, but I was hoping to see Donald Sutherland win since his character is a joy to watch on that show.
– It was a shame that Jason Lee didn’t win best comedy actor for “My Name Is Earl” which is the best new comedy of the year. I can’t see what people like about “The Office” as the US version of that show is so boring, I’d rather watch Golf.
So overall, it was a good night to watch the GLobes. Whether or not they will influence the next round of Oscar handouts remains to be seen. I guess we’ll find out when the nominations are given out in two weeks. Until then, everyone take care and I’ll be around.

I have loved Jason Lee ever seen I seen him in mallrats. I now have all of his movies ( even the bad ones..lol) I really enjoy his show. It should have won something. He is too funny.

I don’t watch any of those TV shows and I haven’t seen the movies. I hate awards shows anyway. They are just like the Miss America Pageant to me. A watse of time. Frankly, I think it’s criminal that there is so much more on TV and so much less worth watching.

I’m not going to diss anyone who watches the awards shows but I tend to agree with Paula. It’s like the awards shows, “reality” shows and Who wants to be a singer/dancer/whatever shows are excuses for Hollywood to avoid having to put out shows with a little thought and creativity.

The awards were pretty good and most of the winners were expected. You should totally check out Brokeback Mountain when it heads your way. I just saw it today and it is by far one of the best movies of this year. The acting, the directing, the cinematography…all of it was amazing.
