GOP Fashion Tips and other stuff…

You know we all called Sarah Palin ‘Caribou Barbie’ out of jest, but who would have thunk that she came with $150,000 in excesseries? The repubs were the first to attack Jon Edwards for getting a $400 haircut, so how can the RNC even try to excuse using the hard earned money that was donated to them by their own supporters to give Palin and her little ones for an all expense shopping spree? Many GOP donors are livid about this, and if you’re going to preach yourself as just another ‘hockey mom’ spending that much money on your new wardrobe isn’t the way to do it. The DNC scrambled to release the documents necessary to prove how much money was spend on Obama and Biden for clothing: Zero. They buy their own clothing, like every other regular adult does. Someone also was quick to point out that no one made this much of a hoopla about Hillary’s wardrobe, but the answer to that is easy: because she didn’t make someone else pay for them. If anyone used campaign funds to pay for something like clothing, no matter who they are they would be grilled for it by the media. Just ask Jon Edwards.

Here’s an interesting question for you: Does anyone remember the incident when Oprah felt like giving away a free car to everyone in her audience? Everyone was so shocked and happy and excited… until they had to declare it as income and pay taxes on it. Now what is the difference between that and being given $150,00 worth of clothing from the RNC? There isn’t, which is why Sarah Palin might have to declare all of her new duds as income according to some tax experts. Any attempt to write this off as a business expense or a ‘uniform’ to avoid taxes can’t count for one simple reason: Palin works for the State of Alaska, not the RNC. So enjoy the excessories Caribou Barbie because come next April, you’ll be paying for them!

McCain has been making some major gaffes on the campaign trail, some that are so hilarious I almost ruined my keyboard with soda. But at the moment I am starting to give the old guy a little sympathy and a tiny bit of slack. He’s been on the campaign trail for almost a year and a half if not two years. My brain would be mush by now so I can only imagine the kind of mental and physical fatigue the man must be going through this late in the campaign. Ditto for Obama, as he too has been in this from the beginning and has to be feeling the drain from the trail.

With all the debates out of the way, there is only one television event left, that being the 30 minute Obama primetime special that he paid for out of his own 150 million dollar fund. Fox even pushed back the start time of Game 6 of the World Series by 15 minutes so they could broadcast the special as well, but to be honest… I doubt the series will go that far. You know you’ve got great campaign funding when you can buy 30 minutes of primetime from three of four major networks and it’s not even a drop in the bucket. This just goes to show you where the real money comes from. I’m sure it’s great to get funding from companies and rich people, but there are over two hundred million people in the US. If just a quarter of that many people made a donation of $25 to the same campaign, that’s 1.2 billion dollars in funding for your Presidental war chest. That makes what Obama is making a drop in the bucket compared to the potential someone could rake in if they just managed to get the support of 25% of the nation.

Getting back to the special, I think this was a brilliant idea. It gives Barack a chance to make a last minute plea to the people on primetime, and McCain will really have nothing to repond with. Even if he is given a chance to respond, he won’t get 30 minutes to do it. What I also liked about this purchase of time on the 29th is that it’s primetime insurance. Against what? How about an ugly October surprise? I have my doubts anything is going to come up now this close to the election, but if it did… that 30 minutes would have been the perfect chance to attack it and get things back on track. If there is nothing to defend the campaign against, the 30 minutes can be used for a last minute appeal for votes. I really think the best way to do that would be a sit down interview with a big name. Oprah would be at the top of that list, but if she doesn’t feel right doing it, I know there are oodles of television journalists who would leap at the chance to conduct the interview. Should make for an interesting show… and I’ll tape Pushing Daisies on the DVR and watch it later.

Speaking of television, I’ve got a very interesting video to post. This one was so funny. Ron Howard, television actor (Happy Days) turned director (Apollo 13, Da Vinci Code) made a video that not only endorses Barack Obama but holds nothing back, using everything in his arsonel to win some votes. Those who are fans of Howard’s past television gigs are going to get a huge kick out of this video… it’s hilarous! Enjoy the video and see you around…

Just for the record, the US has a population a little over 300 million. I just can’t get outraged over IHSP’s wardrobe. It just strikes me as so par for the course, so completely typical of anyone who comes into money, that I simply find it impossible to give a damn about it. And Obama’s TV spot is a really good idea. And the Maple Leafs suck. Just noticed that in your interests. Sorry, they suck.
